Weighted Blanket

LongDuckDong · 09/09/2021 12:33

My anxiety is really bad at the moment and i have been recommended to try a weighted blanket. If I base it on my weight then I want to order a 9kg one but the brand I like the look of only has a 5kg one.

Does anyone have any experience of these and can advise please?

Mine's either 8-9 kg, also a cheap buy from Amazon. Love it. It goes over the duvet and gets chucked in the washing machine when needed. Also dries v quickly

blueskytoday06 · 09/09/2021 19:06

I have a 5kg and it's plenty heavy enough for me.

Macncheeseballs · 09/09/2021 19:08

Doesn't it make you hot?

CiaoForNiao · 09/09/2021 19:08

I've got a v.expensive gravity blanket. At the time I bought it they offered instalments which was the only way I could afford it. Other than buying a cheap one which, at the time, there weren't many of around. And the ones that did exist were weird sizes so wouldn't fit in a duvet cover and are too heavy for most washing machines. Mine came with a cover and is single bed sized so I can use the dcs spare bedding if I need to.

I'd be too hot if I used my duvet and my weighted blanket, but I'm always hot!

Following and shamelessly placemarking

I also have the Online Home Shop one in non-fluffy pink (6kg). DS has the grey fluffy one (4kg). We love them!

I went 9kg and it changed my life! V dramatic i know but i now have the most amazing nights sleep. I use over top of duvet and i honestly think when holidays are a thing again i'll need to bring it with me Grin

The Brentford one says it should be handwashed which is a pain. Do any of you put it in the machine?

IcedPurple · 09/09/2021 22:21

I have a 9kg one which I got from Amazon. I weight about 70kg myself, so it's more than the usually recommended 10% of body weight. I find that it helps me to stay asleep once I've dozed off, but not sure it helps me to get to sleep in the first place.

Also when I want to get out of the bed it's really heavy to move which can be quite uncomfortable. I think if I were to get one again, I'd go for a lower weight or maybe the same weight spread over a bigger blanket.

SunscreenCentral · 09/09/2021 22:27

I'm so tempted. I really struggle with anxiety and insomnia. Would I be too hot?!

Beamur · 09/09/2021 22:30

Most of them have washable covers. I put a sheet under DD's one and just wash the sheet.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 09/09/2021 22:43

I have a 9kg one and also love it. I don't have anxiety buy have been going through a stressful time and think it really helps with the effects. I would prioritise getting the right weight ratio because otherwise I don't think you will get the full benefits - that's the science bit!

DukeOfEarlGrey · 09/09/2021 22:44

I am also struggling to get off to sleep tonight and have just been inspired to go and get mine Smile

Yes. 30 wash. It was fine.
BrendaBubbles · 09/09/2021 23:02

Make sure you order one that comes from a UK warehouse/company. I ordered one from a UK company but they sent it from a Polish warehouse without any warning and I had to pay both duty and VAT. I was fuming.

Most of them can be machine washed, but check the weight limit for your appliance. The blanket might be too heavy and could damage the machine.

We have an 8kg one and TBH it's way to heavy for me. I find it exhausting. If I was buying again I'd go for 6kg.

The Brentford is definitely UK. Ordered mine and it came two days later. Ds spotted it so returned and ordered another. Also arrived within days. About two weeks later dd visited it and snaffled mine so I ended ip ordering a third.... None attracted duty or VAT and all came from the UK.

She'd not long had a pup who peed all over it by accident so she decided to wash it on a cool wash and hope for the best. As I said above it was fine, just a pig to dry.

I love my weighted blanket! Using it now. I want another slightly bigger one. I have depression and anxiety and I find it really helpful.

I think I would too. I struggle with mine.

I was thinking of buying a lighter one but as I live alone, it seems a bit wasteful to have two weighted blankets.

Wiredforsound · 09/09/2021 23:39

I got an 8k one from Amazon and it didn’t do anything for me, but it made a whole world of difference to my DP - amazing sleep, reduced stress related rashes and eczema, and weirdly his skin really improved. It was generally fine - just average skin, but now he is positively glowing with health.

mateysmum · 10/09/2021 08:16

Good point about the machine weight limit. Can't remember if mine is 7 or 9 kg.

Racingadmin · 10/09/2021 08:49

I've got a 9kg one and put a fleecy duvet cover on it. Use if mostly fir sitting downstairs rather than in bed
