Had a procedure today, had a GA, usually sleep like a baby after a GA

I’m wide a bloody wake!!!

So unfair.

So AIBU and the drugs should work!

I usually wake up sobbing and insisting I’m going to wet myself. That didn’t happen so just too that as a bonus.

They did give me some pain killers that hurt like hell going in through the line though so maybe that’s it.

Oh and defo not sedated, though I’d be equally miffed as I usually sleep like a log after that too.

@BrendaBubbles

Are you saying they operated on you and you were conscious rather than out? That is a thing and the thought of it terrifies me
Oh good god no. I was definitely knocked out, just have been done out of the awesome nights sleep that usually follows. Think I got a couple of hours in the end.

@Whinginadeville

Blimey I feel robbed I've had 5 operations in the last 10 years and I'm always awake all night post GA. I do have a serious nap every day for about 6 weeks after though
Same!

After one op I was in a hospital bed next to a huge window full of sky and I watched that sky all night. I remember thinking “any minute now I’ll be asleep” but the minutes turned into hours and that dark night sky turned into sunrise.

Neonplant · 08/09/2021 07:55

I'm having my first GA later this month. I'm absolutely shitting myself. So I'd love to hear how lovely it is.

Polmuggle · 08/09/2021 07:57

@SpindleWhorl

I always wake up sobbing, which is pretty embarrassing really.
I wake up vomiting.

Not fun.

Really not fun after surgery on your abdomen!

Littlecaf · 08/09/2021 08:02

You can ask for anti sickness tablets etc so your not sick after.

I just remember the pain after (appendicitis) rather than the sleep! But I did sleep for days……..like a week I recall. (Nasty emergency operation)

kimlo · 08/09/2021 08:03

@Neonplant I've got a pretty big operation coming up. I said to my boss I'm not looking forward to it, but at least I get a GA.

Just take it easy afterwards.

ThinWomansBrain · 08/09/2021 08:05

Last GA I had I didn't come round properly - was in the recovery room for hours. Not sure why but they made me drink lucozade - it was foul.
Little sleep as after a few hours at home I had to go back into hospital.

Not a competition, but it could be worse :(

Cabinfever10 · 08/09/2021 08:07

@Singlebutmarried I must admit that I'm quite jealous of you and all these people saying that they have a good sleep after a GA as I never have, though I'm that annoying person anaesthetics hate, I'm a complete bugger to knock out and even worse to keep under (have had partial awareness before) though I'm usually awake and sitting up by the time I get to recovery so just get wheeled straight to the ward and unless it's a procedure that requires an overnight I'm able to go home as soon as I've had a cup of tea and slice of toast which is great as I hate hospitals

It’s usually all very civilised and lovely.

The floaty light feeling afterwards (when you’re out of recovery) is ace.

Prepare to wake in recovery feeling very emotional, as attested to upthread it can lead to snotty crying, they’ve seen it all before though.

Hope all goes well. X

I’m the opposite.

Even mild sedation leads to a very fuzzy few hours. I’m a bugger to wake up.

@Polmuggle tell them this in the future and they’ll up your antisickness so much that you won’t even feel slightly nauseous.

CottonSock · 08/09/2021 08:48

Had a GA for appendix on 27th Aug. My sleep is still fucked. It was all a bit traumatic, but I'm getting fed up. Only sleep if I take tablets

Whinginadeville · 08/09/2021 09:12

I had an op 5 weeks ago and told them about my usual sickness on waking and was told they've made huge advancements in anaesthetics and the new ones aren't anything like as bad and it wasn't I woke up quite well no sickness just had a drowsy hour or two.

ipswichwitch · 08/09/2021 09:36

Only had ga once but I woke up dizzy as a duck and vomiting everywhere.

Did have some lovely sedation for a wisdom tooth extraction though! not only did I fall asleep throughout the procedure, I entertained the waiting room on my way out regaling all with tales of the lovey sleep I’d just had, and they should all give it a try! My brother was 🙄 as he’s trying to get me back to the car!

CovidCorvid · 08/09/2021 09:39

I had a GA a few months ago and it was terrible. Not only was I wide awake after but I had the worst sore throat ever and I've had a few GAs but nothing like this. I couldn't talk for two days. Wasn't bothered about the surgical pain but could have wept with the pain from my throat!

CottonSock · 08/09/2021 09:42

@CovidCorvid I had this after my wisdom teeth and they had squashed my uvula (?) with the tube. It went funny and the end dropped off. They photographed it for an anesthetic journal. At first no-one would believe thst my throat REALLY hurt.

Polmuggle · 08/09/2021 09:45

I got the antisickness meds but god they hurt like a bugger coming in through your IV! Anyone else find this?

MiseryFire · 08/09/2021 09:55

@polmuggle They can definitely irritate your veins!

The one GA I've had was excellent, totally worth the painful back surgery. They gave me diamorphine before the propofol, hands down, best 5 seconds of my entire life. I was euphoric.

Plus I had two toddlers at the time so a night in hospital away from them still ranks in my top 3 best ever holidays.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 08/09/2021 10:01

@Polmuggle do you get reflux? I have a hiatus hernia and they think its the reflux that makes me vomit after GA. They give me a PPI or similar prior to the GA now and that seems to help.

I am with you OP I usually sleep wonderfully for a few days afterwards.

Trumanshow · 08/09/2021 10:17

Don’t think I’ve ever slept well after a GA! Had 3 already this year and deff didn’t sleep well. Too much pain and too much noise going on… morphine gave me nightmares too.

Singlebutmarried · 08/09/2021 10:55

Ooh that’ll be what made my wrist feel like it was snapping yesterday
OP posts:
Polmuggle · 08/09/2021 11:04

No, no reflux!

I didn't sleep for long immediately after my GA, but I did sleep a lot for weeks and weeks after! Full on fatigue where I slept for 12-14 hours a day!

NotMyCat · 08/09/2021 11:06

I ping awake and ask for food and tea. Then am wired and don't sleep for 2 days
