I hear you - I really wasn't meaning it in a derogatory way I promise. It just does make a difference for equipment. I was probably similar weight, and when I was buying ours I found a lot had max user weights of about 100kg and some even less. My MIL has a an exercise bike that feels like you are cycling on a space hopper it moves around so much Grin

For me the key is something decent on TV. You'll be surprised how quickly you can build up your stamina too, and once you see progress you will feel better. I've still got a fair way to go but the exercise has definitely helped. I also hop on one of them for an extra session if I'm craving something sweet sometimes - either the exercise makes the craving sod off, or I burn off the equivalent calories first! Mostly once I'm done I don't want whatever I was craving though.

Good luck

I wasn't offended at all by your suggestion and totally agree. I just dont know what to pick. Completely stuck. Think i still prefer the treadmill idea though.

We have a Nordic Track one that we bought second hand and I love it. I’m so much more likely to pop onto it for half an hour in the day than I would be to go for a run as I hate running in rain, sun or wind!

It can fold up but it’s very sturdy and we have it set up with internet and tv etc which improves matters greatly

We had a Nordic track one which we bought second hand. The belt bit broke and Nordic track did not have the parts so it’s defunct now. The local engineer we got to come and look at it said unless we were going to spend ALOT of money to replace it then the best course of action was to buy one for £300/400 from Argos and get the extended warranty. He said the warranty was good and then you know you have at least 5 years worth of use for your money.

DH has done his knee in and we got a cross trainer instead which i prefer as it is less impact and it feels like it is doing something for my bingo wings Smile

The best machine is the one you will use and enjoy. You will know best what that is.

Personally I can't run - my knee is shot due to an accident, but tbh I couldn't really run before that anyway. When I went to the gym I walked (on a decent incline) on a treadmill but I didn't really love it so when I was choosing home equipment it wasn't the one for me.

I like the cross trainer because I can still go at a decent speed without the impact on my knees, and it works arms too. Bike is good and often the machine I use first to warm up, and as you get fitter you can get lots of spin classes online which helps to build your fitness up compared to just staying at the same speed. Rower is a great full body work out and the machine is really compact (we have a water rower which can stand upright when not in use, although they've gone up in price loads since we got ours, but others are similarly space saving)

Thank you. Yes. I guess that's exactly right. I like the idea of a, treadmill because i at least know that i can walk i guess. Im horrified by how unfit i am.

You will be amazed how quickly your fitness improves. That's one of the nice things about having equipment at home - you can do whatever you can manage, but you can do it more often.

To give you an idea - I hadn't worked out for years. I was unfit anyway, then got pregnant with number 2, hellish pregnancy, gained more weight, lockdown, moved house, more lockdown - suddenly more than 3 years had passed. My fitness was non existent. I started exercising at the end of May. First day I managed 5 minutes on the rower and cross trainer, and about 10 minutes on pretty low resistance on the bike. But almost every day after that it got better. By the start of August I could manage 1 hour each on bike and cross trainer, and happily doing 30 minutes on the rower. And I've upped resistance through that too. But it being at home helps - no wasted time, just hop on for however much time you can manage/spare.

However unfit you are, once you start you will be fitter tomorrow.

Thank you. Im thinking of maybe looking at John Lewis rather than amazon. Not sure. I definitely have to do something though.

Try specialist places like powerhouse fitness too.

Honeypickle · 06/09/2021 21:58

I bought an exercise bike - the cheapest I could find, about £80/£90 - during lockdown. I’ve lost 10lbs through cycling 45 minutes Monday - Friday whilst watching Love Island.

mommybear1 · 06/09/2021 22:09

@coodawoodashooda I'm on my second treadmill. I had one when I was at my biggest 17stone and found it great as you say for walking if I couldn't run. Both of mine were Reeboks £250 or under neither were quiet I love mine have done Couch to 5k on them. Have restarted recently and can now run 45 mins without stopping the great thing about treadmills imo is that you can use them in any weather and with kids you can literally say I'll be 30 mins and you are done if you road run you can aim for 30 mins but it can take longer. I've got a dodgy back which can also impact my knees/hips so I feel more confident being at home running so if I get in any difficulty I'm already home iyswim 🤷🏻‍♀️ . I definitely recommend the treadmill shop around try Argos etc maybe not Amazon. HTH

dangermouseisace · 06/09/2021 22:36

I had a Nordic trak to run on, which was good. It folded…but was still huge and incredibly heavy. Cheap treadmills are often narrow BTW. My treadmill was VERY noisy though- they all are! The motor, belt squeaks etc. So if you’re planning doing exercise whilst the kids are asleep the bike might be better.

I have this one. Looks like it's not available new anymore. I use it all the time and I tried an exercise bike before hand and hated that. The faster it goes the louder it gets, though its not too loud in my opinion. I use wireless headphones and listen to the radio, a playlist or a podcast while I run.
