Not normal that my child is sick when he coughs?!

My DS (2.5yo) has had a cough 3 times in the last few months. Negative for covid, just something he's picked up from nursery.

The problem is that every single night he's been ill, he's coughed in bed and thrown up. I have taken him to the doctor who said his chest is clear he just must be making himself gag.

Has anyone else experienced this? I have asthma myself so was just wondering if this is something more.

AIBU to think it's not normal?!

Unfortunately I used to do this! I grew out of it though if that's any help? It sounds stupid but it was just the way I coughed that caused me to gag and be sick. My brother was the same

I'm asthmatic and there is usually a few nights during a cold or chest infection when I wake up choking and coughing and usually vomit. I get a laryngeal spasm triggered by coughing.

This happens to my DD too as she's prone to chesty coughs. It's an absolute pain to clear up phlegmy vomit off carpet 🤮

Whooping cough can cause this

My daughter is 7 and has always done this

DC2 does this pretty much every time he has a cold which is luckily rarely. It happens to me sometimes, too but I probably have the most overactive gag reflex in the universe.

Hamster1111 · 06/09/2021 19:32

Yes my DC does this often with a cough. Lots of clear phlegm comes up. Getting less frequent as they get older (8 now)

Russell19 · 06/09/2021 22:21

Oh gosh have I actually got 6+ years of this? 🤣

My 4yo DS does this. I associate it with his CMPA (mostly grown out of) and reflux (constant until 15m). I think all the acid from his reflux has made his throat more sensitive, so when he coughs too much and is snotty it all comes back up. Usually occurs in the night when he's been led down. When he gets like that I cut dairy out of his diet completely for a couple of days and then reintroduce it slowly. It also happens when he cries when he's snotty. It's really hard to explain to him to stop crying or he'll make himself sick again.

The frustrating thing is when he gets like this he's usually under the weather anyway, and when I would want to give him calpol. But I can't give him calpol because it will all just come back up again. So I have to reason with him and keep him calm and wait a bit and then attempt a small dose of calpol.

2 of mine do this (aged 8 and 10).
