I lived in Istanbul while young. Some friends had a Dalmation dog which they called "çile", and they explained that çile meant "freckles".

I hung on to that precious nugget for many many years.

Now I have met another dog called Chile (pronounced çile) and I remembered my original çile. The new Chile has a single spot over the eye - since Chile's owners have no knowledge of Turkish, the name seemed beautifully if accidentally appropriate... until I looked at an online translator and it seems that çile in Turkish means suffering or ordeal.

Stupidly disappointed and also wondering why the orginal çile owners would want to call their dog "ordeal".

Can I have been that wrong? I don't usually have problems with my memory!

No idea on pronunciation but could it just be a spelling issue?

Google says the Turkish word for freckles is ciller. I couldn't find the c with the accent on my keyboard apologies.

katscamel · 05/09/2021 19:22

I had to Google it as I've pretty much forgotten the Turkish I once knee unfortunately (not that I knew the words for freckles). If you're still not sure of the translation I'll ask some Turkish friends

shockthemonkey · 05/09/2021 19:23

oh yes! thank you both very much. Very pleased to come by this info.

i was mis-hearing çiller as çile. both sound very similar...

Bir şey değil, maymun!

takehomepay · 05/09/2021 20:49

Türk dizisini seviyorum!

takehomepay · 05/09/2021 20:53

I wonder if çiller is related to çilek (strawberry).

shockthemonkey · 06/09/2021 08:19

Did you watch Fatma, takehomepay? Strong stuff. Only understood one word in ten (thank goodness for subtitles).

Biz maymunuz, monkey Smile. My dog, when he was being very very cute, was affectionately labeled maymun.

I'll have to watch that Maymun. Did anyone see the series on Netflix (whose name I forget) about the woman psychiatrist struggling with her prejudice towards covered women? I thought it started out well, but I got too annoyed with her part way through. There was a Kurdish couple/family in it who I liked though. The secondary plot lines were more interesting - the families looking after disabled adults at home, etc.

notaflyingmonkey · 06/09/2021 09:10

It's called Ethos (Bir Başkadır)

shockthemonkey · 07/09/2021 09:22

Oh thank you! I will watch Bir Başkadir next. Thanks for the recommendation!

@shockthemonkey no, I haven't watched Fatma yet, will add it to my list :)
