Toddler temperature, vomiting and diarrhoea

Posting for traffic - sorry, just really concerned.

My DS, 16 months, has had croup for a couple of weeks now. Yesterday he was really lethargic, had a temperature, and in the evening projectile vomited and had diarrhoea. We called 111 and they told us someone would call back.

He had another episode of projectile vomiting at 1am, so we took him to A&E and were there until 7am this morning.

His temp spiked at 37.9 and he is since home, but he can’t keep down food and is having frequent diarrhoea, that is complete liquid, smells really foul and that you can physically hear happening.

He’s more active and he is alert and while tired he is being his usual self, and he is able to keep down fluids.

111 have said to go to the GP tomorrow but I’m just a bit concerned because I have a history of ulcerative colitis and have had my large intestine removed because of it, so anything tummy related makes me panic.

Is this normal? Unsure whether to take him back in or wait for GP tomorrow?

I don’t think I would be panicking. I would just suggest sips of water to let things settle. One of mine once vomited for several days and her temp was frequently over 40. I kept a close eye on nappies and lethargy but otherwise let it run it’s course.

If he’s keeping fluids down and playing I’d wait until tomorrow and see the GP. Did A&E not give you specifics about when to seek help? Long waits in A&E are miserable enough for adults never mind with a toddler.

It sounds like a tummy bug, I would give small amounts of fluid (5ml via a syringe) every 15 minutes and see if that is tolerated. If it is you can slowly shorten the time between until he is able to drink normally again. If you are worried, call for advice again. I hope he feels better soon

Sounds like norovirus to me, there a lot around at the minute.

The main thing is to make sure he’s not dehydrated. The rest should settle in a day or two. Is he peeing? It’s good that he’s keeping down fluids and is alert.

UC is rare in children, stomach viruses are extremely common. My toddler has had at least 5 or 6 stomach bugs in her 2.5 years.

Thanks for the reassurance everyone. Did think I’m over-panicking but due to my medical history it’s always been something I’ve panicked over. He is tolerating fluids very well and has wet nappies. I’ll just keep an eye until GP tomorrow. X

If it were me I’d just ride it out as long as he’s drinking, having wet nappie and not lethargic. It just needs to take its time to pass through. Ice lollies are good and you can buy flavoured rehydrating sachets (Dioralyte) from the pharmacy.

He sounds like he is though the worst. Keep up with meds to keep temperature down and lots fluids.

Oogachuckachopsy · 05/09/2021 16:39

That’s not a very high temperature so I wouldn’t be too worried. Keep on with fluids and small meals.

When my DD had norovirus and couldn't be admitted to hospital 50 miles away as I had a newborn, we were advised to give her sips of flat coke every 15 -30 minutes. It worked.
