Health Visitor 12-month check

Are these happening?

I have a 15-month-old and we haven't heard from a HV since he was 6 weeks old (we are in Cambridgeshire). We received a questionnaire in the mail when he was 11 months that said we would need it at the 12 month check but it was never followed up.

No concerns from me, but I don't have any other children, so I can only assume that everything with DS is ok.

Is this normal? Should I be contacting the HV?

DC1 never got his 1 year check because of cuts. Not covid related, it was 2017 but I had no concerns. With DC2 we had moved area and she did have it. It was a nice to have, nothing more. If you had any concerns I would chase up HV for advice but otherwise it's nothing to worry about.

Mine never had HV checks as the earlier advice had been such a waste of time. Press on if you have concerns but if so I'd say you would be better off to contact your GP fir onward referral to a specialist. Ime all the hv ever did was say "I dunno, I'm not an expert". Mine is now a lecturer on a public health course. God help future generations!

What is the 12-month check for exactly? If it's a nice to have, I obviously don't need it, but if it could benefit DS then it might be worth pushing.

My daughter didn't have a 12 month check. Saying that, we didn't see hide nor hair of our HV after she made quite a serious error resulting in my daughter having to go into hospital at six months so I don't know if that had anything to do with it. We moved not long afterwards and our new HV has been great. Initial visit then the 27 month check and very available on the phone.

We met the health visitor twice - once at a newborn visit when DD was about a week, and again at 6 weeks when she did a weight check. Never saw her again and DD is almost 3. We did get an invite to the 2.5 year developmental check but this was just me completing the questionnaire, briefly meeting a community nursery nurse who asked a few more questions, and that was that and I’ve not heard again since. Unless you have concerns I wouldn’t worry about it.

My DS had his at 10 months... 🙄. It's to ask if they do certain things. They literally go by that questionnaire and score them at the end.

He's 26 months now and waiting for his 2 year check.... you know because of covid they have back logs but knew when the kids were turning 2. I had a great HV but she left shortly after DS was born. Can see why.

My toddler will be 2 in a couple of months and we haven't heard from the health visitor since the birth.

Perhaps they might do a 2 year check.

I'm more bothered about the fact there aren't any dentists in a 50 mile radius who will take anyone on. They aren't even seeing emergencies here. It's awful.

SylvanasWindrunner · 05/09/2021 16:15

I just looked at the questionnaires they use myself. They're all online.

Our HV service have recently very proudly announced they're going back to offering face to face appointments (whoop de doo!) So I suspect our two year check won't happen while they get over the shellshock of normality resuming. If I were an NHS frontline worker after the last 18 months I'd be wondering how to get into the HV service as it seems to be money for old rope (assuming they weren't redeployed back into acute, I don't know...)

My daughter had her 12 month check (during lockdown 3). The health visitor just talked through the checklist. They sent some advice about sleep as I'd discussed that but other than that we had no issues. I found it helpful for the sleep advice but it was probably the same advice that I would have found by googling.

DD had her 12 month check at 9 months over video chat. Video kept cutting out and ended up being over the phone in the end.

We got the forms in the post too with a letter asking us to call of fix a time & date. Maybe you were meant to have the same letter but it was missed out?

Bunnycat101 · 05/09/2021 16:56

The decline in the service over the past few years has been appalling. With my eldest I got weaning workshops, first aid sessions from the HV proper face to face checks including a long facilitated play session for the 2y one to check development. My youngest has just had questionnaires sent through the post with no interaction whatsoever.

If you look up ages and stages questionnaires (and scoring as you don’t need to meet each element to be fine) you’ll find the right one for your baby’s age and it will give you an idea if there are any issues.

That's because it's a 10-12 month review.

The questionnaire your DS received would
Be for a 10 month old.
There's 11 months and 12 month ASQ's too.

The information you would have received would be the same as the 12 month review.

MooseBreath · 05/09/2021 17:56

Sounds like I don't need the check as after a quick Google, DS is doing everything they'd ask about. Thank you everyone!
