To find it frightening how people cannot see past political bias in newspapers and believe everything they read?

Dad for example reads the Telegraph and believes that the Brexit staff shortages are a myth. On their website there is an article about the " woke, workshy youth."
Another person i know reads the daily fail and hates Meghan Markle.
The left aren't much better and many of the articles in the Guardian are anti Brexit/ pro left ideals. Plus people gravitate towards what papers suit their beliefs best.
Aibu to think that this is a bit concerning and makes it hard to read between the lines?

Yabu...newspapers are a vital source of information and individuals are aware of bias and can filter it out.
Yanbu...people believe whatever they read in the papers and are easily influenced by bias.

Some people can see through bias, but others like their own bias to be confirmed by the paper they read.

I especially feel a lot of non-rich people do not consider who owns the papers and why they might favour the Tories, i.e. because they then pay less tax.

You are conflating two issues: cause-and-effect and correlation. You need to show that people believe what they do because of the newspapers they read (cause and effect); otherwise, it's a case of they have their beliefs and they read certain newspapers (correlation).

I'll give you an example: red cars are more likely to be in accidents than cars of other colours. Can you prove that this is due to colour (cause and effect) or are there other elements to take into account (correlation)?

To be fair, the DM is actually a better newspaper than many people on MN give it credit for.

ToomuchHeat · 04/09/2021 11:17

Well don’t need the papers to tell you what MM is like… just their own outbursts and self importance is evident in what they say themselves.

But other than that yes I can see political bias but I’ve always known the political leaning of papers so read them knowing that

People know The Guardian is left wing. But the problem is most of our press is right wing - and if you’re left wing then the right wing press just come to destroy you.

Popcornriver · 04/09/2021 11:22

Agreed OP. It seems if you want all the information on a topic you need to read the same story on multiple platforms. It would be great to have independent news that doesn't push a bias but it seems to be everywhere. That includes left wing bias such as the guardian as well.

And that is why you read a bit of everything

KeyErro · 04/09/2021 11:39

I think it's better that people read newspapers because there's some degree of quality control; editorial standards, professional journalists, a requirement to check facts and meet regulatory standards etc.
It's easily possible to find out who owns what newspaper groups and learn about their political beliefs and connections.
The alternative is that people avoid MSM and read any old shit on the internet where you can't see who's behind the website, and there's no requirement for accuracy of reporting.

Yes this.
Biolo · 04/09/2021 11:57

Yes, terrifies me.
I like to read the headlines of them all, and maybe a couple of articles which interest me, to see all of the perspectives.
It’s interesting to see the different angles they take.

AllTheSingleLadiess · 04/09/2021 12:03

People pick the newspaper closest to their bias. They want to read content that confirms their preconceptions hence the newspapers printing that angle. Print media is a difficult market when there is TV and Internet news that reach their audiences instantly. They will print whatever makes people buy their product.

Roominmyhouse · 04/09/2021 12:06

We need to teach critical thinking to kids and teach them to question the agenda of those publishing whatever story they are reading. Its much better if you read news with an understanding that there is likely to be a reason for that persons angle.

sst1234 · 04/09/2021 12:11

You don’t have to read Daily Mail to dislike Meghan Markle. She is the epitome of virtue signalling, self indulgent, publicity seeking, talentless wannabe.
Aside from that I don’t think people get their political leanings for newspapers. They get them from personal experiences and actions of those around them and then read papers that re affirm their views.

In what ways is it better?

Lockheart · 04/09/2021 12:14

This is why I read the FT. I find it to be the most unbiased of the lot.

malificent7 · 04/09/2021 12:35
