To wonder why a gap has closed between my teeth?

That’s it

A few years ago (2017) a dentist sanded down the edge of a tooth that he said was uneven

I was pretty mad because I ended up with a distinct gap between two teeth and before this they had looked perfect 👌

I just noticed a few days ago that the gap is gone!

My children have confirmed that indeed the gap has disappeared and I now have perfect teeth again

Any idea what might have happened? Am concerned in faces the teeth have moved a bit?

Teeth do move about in the mouth. Be happy your gap has gone.

beautifullymad · 03/09/2021 22:48

Teeth move forward. Have a look at your parents teeth, yours will likely follow the same pattern. Mine did!

Wow 😱

So... they’re not about to call out then? I was so worried earlier!

THANKS 🙏

Have you had a late wisdom tooth emerge? Weirdly, I had one emerge last year (I'm in my late 40s Confused ). I googled it and apparently it's not uncommon for them to appear later in life. If you've had one come up, it might have shoved your other teeth along a bit.

I think this is common when you age.
I once had a lovely gap between my front teeth. Looked good. It gradually closed.

HaroldMeeker · 03/09/2021 22:53

Wisdom tooth coming in? That shifted my front teeth about, a lot!

Oogachuckachopsy · 03/09/2021 23:00

Teeth move. Wisdom teeth especially cause shifts and can fuck up teenage orthodontics. I imagine it’s that. Why would you have been worried about it?

Oinkypig · 03/09/2021 23:09

It’s not wisdom teeth it’s called physiological mesial drift and teeth can drift forward as you get older. It’s nothing to worry about and sounds like it’s worked out!

Oinkypig · 03/09/2021 23:10

Sorry that sounds like all your teeth will end up at the front but it’s more if you’ve had ortho or you have a bit of space everything might shuffle forward slightly!

I’m worried about losing teeth in the long term

Watching what half my family have gone through with dental issues alarms me

In 46 and try to keep on top of things

Thankyou, that’s hugely reassuring

My dentist called this lateral drift
My middle top gap has completely closed and my bottom teeth are more crowded than they were

EIIa · 03/09/2021 23:44

I just never knew this was a thing!

Teeth move around. The opposite thing happened to me, a gap appeared in my mid 20s seemingly out of nowhere. I didn’t mind it at first but it started getting wider and became very noticeable and I was worried about other teeth moving to make room for their new positioning so I ended up getting braces in my late 20s. I asked the orthodontist about how it happened but she just shrugged and said they just do it sometimes!

Scarby9 · 03/09/2021 23:50

I always had naturally straight, gap free, front teeth.
In the last ten years one front tooth has gradually been pushed back out of line due to lateral drift.
A couple of (rude, I thought) people have mentioned that I am of an age before people bothered about cosmetic correction of teeth alignment with braces. That's true, but I didn't need any help with tooth alignment until I was about 55!

SirB0bby · 04/09/2021 00:03

I had one of my back teeth removed. The other teeth have moved and almost completely closed the gap. The dentist said mouth is overcrowded so I guess that's why. Teeth move all the time which is why people have retainers after braces so their teeth don't move back again.

Blueleah · 04/09/2021 00:08

My dad had a front tooth removed. Before too long his other teeth moved forward and filled the gap!

BashfulClam · 04/09/2021 00:18

I guy my bottom wisdom teeth out due to the growing in squint and causing issues. A few weeks later I got some pain in my front bottom teeth similar to the feeling I got when I first had braces in. My teeth are crowded and I had two years of proper train track braces as a young teenager to try and straighten them. Teeth do move.
