Getting fired when pregnant. What does one do ?

Might happen unfortunately. Can one look for another job ? Early days pregnant. So would put in a good 7-8 months before having to leave. This is all assuming the pregnancy progresses. Has anyone been in this position ?

Depends - why have you been fired? That’s likely to be more of an issue when finding a new job. Also depends on what you do

mmhhhkkkk · 03/09/2021 20:09

I haven't yet. I just suspect it could happen. I don't want to give loads away. But it's more the fact that the company is going downhill. The main manager has been fired recently already. I've been in a similar position previously where managers started to go and then eventually staff started to be replaced as well. I left before that happens. So I think it's just a matter of time for me.

My daughter was made redundant when pregnant - we brought a successful claim for discrimination against the company. Sex discrimination is one of the few reasons you can bring a claim no matter how long you have been in a job - i.e less than 2 years - and being fired BECAUSE you are pregnant comes under this.

Does your company know you are pregnant - we once made a job offer to a carer - she then told us she was pregnant and we couldn't withdraw the offer etc - dodgy ground for employers!

Finding a new job in my industry is not an issue. I've just never had to do it whilst pregnant. My job history is good. I stay at companies a while etc. I'm not concerned about finding something, but just that it's weird because I know I'm pregnant.

@alittlequinnie yes I told them and I feel like they've let me know more than ever now that I'm not in a good place. So I'm just trying to come up with an exit strategy.

I started a new job when I was pregnant. I was there 6 months before going on mat leave, and I'll be returning at the end of my mat leave. I decided not to tell them until I'd been there a couple of months.

mmhhhkkkk · 03/09/2021 20:13

@AntiHop that's good to know ! I'm glad it worked out. Baby wouldn't be due until May- if all works out, so I would give them a good few months.

If you’re early days, I suppose you’d just find a new job like normal, settle in and tell them down the line?

I’m 24 weeks now and there’d be no hiding it for me, so I guess I’d be unemployed from now on Shock

mmhhhkkkk · 03/09/2021 20:19

@TakeYourFinalPosition haha yeah at 24 weeks you can't hide it ! I suppose I'm not sure if I'll definitely get fired soon, but I don't want to wait around and see, if that makes sense.

@Rugsofhonour thank you. I'll give them a call, just to understand what to look out for.

Getting fired while pregnant doesn't always mean the pregnancy is the reason

elbea · 03/09/2021 21:09

I started a new job in early pregnancy after being made redundant. All was fine but you just get maternity allowance as you don’t qualify for statutory maternity pay.

mmhhhkkkk · 03/09/2021 21:12

@listentomydeclaration I never said it was the reason. I'm just trying to understand what to do in case it happens. I'm also trying to understand what to look out for, to make sure it's not the reason.

Hi @mmhhhkkkk
I just wanted to ask how your job is going? I’m in a similar situation so was wondering what your work decided to do (if anything).

TotallySuper · 03/11/2021 11:22

Why are you making an exit plan? I'd stay and get made redundant - you can't just get sacked for no reason they'd have to make you redundant. Then get another job especially where you've said its easy to do in your industry. Good luck.
