Aibu to expect teachers to uphold mask laws in class?

My child started high school a few weeks back. The covid numbers rose exponentially when restrictions were dropped and schools returned here. Masks are still compulsory in indoor settings here. We’ve had multiple emails saying kids in the school have tested positive and nobody else need isolate etc.

One of my child’s teachers, who has already stated they are anti mask but are forced to wear one at school, has proposed a class party next week and because it’s a party none of them will have to wear masks in class. There is no reason for the party, it’s just because. It will be held indoors.

This is not a post about your opinions on wearing masks, the law says they’re still compulsory here unless exempt and that is not what is in question.

My question is AIBU to expect teachers to uphold the law regarding masks in class, regardless of how ridiculous or irritating they personally find such laws and attire?

A party in a high school class, for what reason? How strange.

If I had to take a guess I'd say the reason is purely to highlight how ridiculous and nonsensical the Scottish mask 'laws' are?

Because he is quite correct. He's an arsehole, but he's also correct.

Covid spreads in high school classes when you are learning but not in restaurants when you're eating, bars when you're drinking, parties when you're celebrating or nightclubs when you're dancing.

Sounds like he's throwing a bash to show the lack of logic.

If it was my child I wouldn't be overly bothered. Probably a good learning experience in there somewhere and if not, it's a memory, eh? Remember that time Mr Hart threw an anti-mask party in third period and everyone was loosing their shit? Canny beat high school.

If he is really throwing an "anti mask" party, and pupils are talking about it as such, he will quite rightly be disciplined for this.

If you look at the ScotGov reference it states ‘non-statutory’ guidance. So mask mandates are not law. Probably can’t make the many guidance measures law as they are unworkable in many circumstances.

@Alpenguin

Yes it’s Scotland and they’re required to wear masks at all times except when eating at lunch.
That is so ridiculous.

I can see why the teacher has had enough.

Mistressiggi · 03/09/2021 23:02

The teacher doesn't get to choose though.

toomuchlaundry yes they should be able to decide themselves. Even if they're not compulsory/necessary some students have been traumatised by this whole pandemic & if wearing a mask gets them into school then let them wear one 🤷🏻‍♀️

toomuchlaundry · 04/09/2021 01:13

It’s not even if they are traumatised. They may feel it is the right thing to do. If some people are still wearing masks in shops why wouldn’t they be able to wear them in school. The Government are still encouraging people to wear masks in confined spaces and that is what a classroom is. It’s just that the Government don’t want to admit that schools aren’t particularly great when it comes to COVID and they also don’t want to spend any money on schools

Teacher sounds like a total arsehole.

I just read an article about a teacher who took off her mask to read to the class. Half of the class contracted covid, mostly the front rows. Is a stupid party worth it? No.
