I made a Claire's Law disclosure request a while back about someone I was dating, am not now.
Was told verbally over phone nothing to disclose.
Today I got a text from a police officer asking to come and see me about it. A few mins later I got a text from my ex, the officer had sent him the same text a few mins before by accident.
So my ex now asked if I had made a disclosure request. I've said no .... but if there is anything to disclose, haven't they now potentially put me in danger?

This is a massive breach of GDPR, I would call 101 again to speak to the station and wish to put in a complaint for this to be taken seriously.

I can't believe an officer would even text someone about this and not call?? Is this standard procedure?

MatildaIThink · 02/09/2021 18:46

Speak to the officer, follow te process through. You might well find they have already reported the mistake themselves. The GDPR issue is almost an irrelevance, the issue will be because of safeguarding and that will tie in with if they need to disclose anything. Unfortunately I suspect that the reason they want to talk to you is because there is something to disclose so I get on with finding out sooner rather than later.

I've had both texts and calls from police officers before so not massively concerned about the fact it was a text, more that it was supposed to be a confidential request unless a disclosure was made and telling him wouldn't put me in danger (as I understand it).

Anyway since time has passed and he hasn't texted me again and isn't banging on my door, I feel a bit safer. The text didn't name him so I could in theory have been asking about anyone but of course it being sent to his number would make anyone suspicious.

If the text said something like come to this named police station at 2 pm on Monday I would change the appointment in case your ex is lurking around. Equally if the text says they will call at your house at a certain time I would change that too.
You cant be too careful with some exes

bathsh3ba · 02/09/2021 19:53

The text gave very little info beyond my first name, the name of the officer, the police force and that it was in relation to a request for a Claire's Law disclosure

I cannot believe this. Why would the police not ring in this situation?

ponyexpress22 · 02/09/2021 22:03

When my DD was being stalked by her ex, it was relentless and very frightening for her, all the police did was send him a text.

He will know full well it was you in that case. The police need to protect you if there has been a disclosure.

That’s awful. Why on Earth are the police doing that? Who’s going to apply knowing that their ex / partner will be told?!
