Anyone’s child had their epic games account (fortnite and rocket league) hacked?

My eldest is so upset. Can’t get into her fortnite account and rocket league account t they have taken all the good stuff. Are we likely to get anything back?

Nope. He has probably gone on to a hack site that he wanted to get items for one of the games. He would have had to put his username and password into said site. No he won’t get it back.

Tuliprain · 01/09/2021 22:01

She said she hasn’t been on any sites and given out passwords or email address. Not given it to any friends either. She’s tried to change her password back but as they’ve changed it she doesn’t know the current password to be able to change it.

Sorry, not familiar with this app/game but have they also changed the email address or could she click a “forgot my password” link and get the password reset via email that way? (If they have that feature which I presume they do)?

Tuliprain · 01/09/2021 22:26

They’ve also changed the email address too. But thank you. We’ve emailed the support people so hopefully they’ll be able tk help. Just want her to get all her stuff back for both games. I’ve not seen her cry for a long time. She’s had a shit year (I know we all have) and this was her thing to keep in touch with friends and brought a smile to her face. Know it sounds silly but really want to sort it for her.

Make sure that she changes anything that has the same or similar password. One possibility for how this happened is they used the same password for something else that has had a data leak. Checking her details on a site like Have I Been Pwned is a good idea. I'm not sure if Epic Games has two-factor authentication but if it does you should set it up.

There is a reddit thread about it, I don't know if it will help your daughter but it tell you all the things you need to do.

Unfortunately the chances are the account has been sold/deleted as detected as hacked, in which case there is little chance of getting anything back Sad. I presume you daughter has checked her junk email etc for the password reset code.

She also needs to change her email password if it was the same as the EPIC account and in the future make sure everything is set up with 2 step verification.

So sorry this has happened, its horrible, it feels almost violating not to mention the time and money that has gone in to the account Sad I hope your daughter is ok

Tuliprain · 01/09/2021 22:41

Thank you. There was a two step verification which they seem to have got passed. She had a notification on her phone with a verification code too (which made her check her account) but don’t know how they bypassed that.

Thanks. She’s really not ok. I’ve not seen her so sad for a very long time. Poor thing.

Haven’t thought about the password reset code. Will check the junk email tomorrow. Thank you.

There was a two step verification which they seem to have got passed.

What second step has she got set up? If it’s an email, they have access to that account. If it’s a device code, shes likely got malware on her device. 2FA is really difficult to hack - if she definitely had that on, and hasn’t used any of the dodgy sites and given them log in code too (I know that can be tempting for young ones!), you likely need to look at her overall device security now.

It won’t help get things back for her - that’s up to Epic now - but it’s vital anyway, for anything else she uses that email for.

I hope they can help her, bless her.

Tuliprain · 01/09/2021 23:03

Thanks. She has bull guard anti virus on her pc so that should protect the pc shouldn’t it? I’m not sure what the second step was - I will check in the morning.

E mail [email protected]
They will sort this out

Tuliprain · 01/09/2021 23:06

I also don’t understand how the verification code came through to her phone. How would they have got that? Added another number to the account?

@Tuliprain
Thank you. There was a two step verification which they seem to have got passed. She had a notification on her phone with a verification code too (which made her check her account) but don’t know how they bypassed that.

Is there a chance that without thinking (I think a lot of people, including adults, have fallen foul to this) she got the notification on her phone, clicked the link in the text message, which took her to a duplicate identical site where she entered her details to check the account and inadvertently gave them the login and password that way?

SolitaryTree · 02/09/2021 09:43

This happened to my son last week.
He hadn’t given out his password to anybody but tried to log in one day and his whole PlayStation account and fortnite account had been hacked.
He was gutted and I completely understand how horrible it is seeing them so sad about this.
They had managed to hack his account and change the email address associated with it from mine to another one.
My eldest is luckily very techy and helped me with what I needed to do which was to call PlayStation support and they then just needed basic details of a bank card that had been used for any purchases on the account.
Luckily he has had the account for a few years and has had vbucks/battle passes etc for gifts/rewards which I’ve used my card for so it was easy to verify.
From there I was sent an email to change everything back and to set up 2 step verification which for some stupid reason I’d not set up with him before?!
If you’ve not made purchases with a card I think there are other ways to prove that it’s your account but I would definitely say to contact PlayStation support.

It’s shit that people can do this, so sorry it’s happened to your daughter.

Tuliprain · 02/09/2021 10:23

@SolitaryTree this sounds the same as us except we did have the 2 step authentication. This morning she woke up to another alert on his phone from her google account having been accessed. Luckily we were able to change the password so have saved that one but they had managed to turn the two step authentication off so I guess somehow they managed that on her epic games account too.

We are in contact via email so hopefully it will get sorted out and fingers crossed can be restored to what it was. We have used a card to purchase v bucks so hopefully that will help us to verify it.
