to think it is disgraceful that babies have bare feet in the freezing cold

I keep seeing on my travells babies and toddlers being pushed around the town with nothing on their little feet. It is freezing cold and the moms are dressed up worm. There is no excuse imo I know they kick off their socks/booties but you could at least put tights on them, even the boys can wear navy tights under their trousers! and they could use a cosy toes buggy snuggle thing. It makes me so . They wouldn't go barefoot in the winter if they were in a wheelchair so why do they do it too their kids?.

When my brother was 7 the police came out to our house. He had decided to sit naked in the snow. Someone has seen him and assumed he had been locked out as punishment.

He hadn't. He just liked taking his clothes off.

My DM was mortified and I think we may still be on the at risk register

tortoiseSHELL · 02/12/2007 22:00

Ds2 always has no socks. He will not keep them on at all. He is 19months, and his feet are too small for socks (size 2.5) - so they always come straight off.

Can't put tights on him - don't fit over his cloth nappies!

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 02/12/2007 22:04

My first thought would be "child just like mine who likes taking socks off".

I became immune to such criticism while we lived in Bulgaria as we would regularly have people (especially elderly women) comment on DS not having a hat or socks on.

He is now 6 and would still be a child that feels the heat rather than the cold. Some children are just like that.

Boogalooblue · 02/12/2007 22:06

How ridiculous, you are being unreasonable and judgemental, go and get stressed about something worthwhile and don't make a fuss about nothing.

BTW my children have all worn tights at times and also kicked off shoes and socks at times and guess what they haven't lost any toes to frostbite

ScottishMummy · 02/12/2007 22:15

UNCLENCH mummyloveslucy LOL if i wanted a hard time bout this i would ask my DP mum like you she thinks this is absolutely shocking. so send the police in right noo!clearly im a bad mum my wee one refuses/wont/chucks socks away hangs wee legs out pram, doing this today actually. no amount of pushing back, cajoling will change this. until lo becomes cold and then lo will put feet back. it must be great to have time to polish your mummy halo and still find time to berate other mum's heheh

yummers · 02/12/2007 22:19

yep my dd does this too - and i have also been known to adopt a very loud voice 'no! don't kick your shoes off darling!' to avoid being labelled a heartless bitch.

BroccoliSpears · 02/12/2007 22:21

Dd often has nothing on her feet. If I know she's going to fall asleep in the car then why struggle and fight to force socks and shoes on, when I'll only have to silently and carefully remove them at the end of the journey to lift her into her cot?

She's a sweaty little betty anyway - gets it from her father. Me, I'm always freezing.

RosaLuxMundi · 02/12/2007 22:22

You know it used to really wind me up when the children were little - every time we went out little old ladies would come up and tell me my baby must have cold feet.
They took their socks and shoes off. I put them back on. They took them off again.
I've bottled it up all these years so I am going to let it out right here and now - you are a judgemental cow MummylovesLucy. Butt right out.

ScottishMummy · 02/12/2007 22:23

oh god i try overcompensate too other day in park chucked socks, shoes out pram and struggling to take off jacket.the just-make-em brigade stress me out - don't know why i worry actuallybut i do

SoupDragon · 02/12/2007 22:25

When I put tights on BabyDragon she screams like mad because she can't pull them off like socks... really p*sses her off!!

ScottishMummy · 02/12/2007 22:28

BroccoliSpears - yes i am always cold wee one would stroll about in the nip if i obliged RosaLuxMundi i agree bleedin judgmental busy bodies feck me right off..only a pair of socks - get over it

llareggub · 02/12/2007 22:29

Who knew that sock wearing (or not) could be so controversial? Get a little perspective, folks.

ScottishMummy · 02/12/2007 22:33

llareggub Doh so nothing-whatsoever-no-siree-ever-got-yer-goat-on-MN blimey how serene are you all us other high expressed emotion mums will slug it out bout socks haha

fireflyxmasfairylights2 · 02/12/2007 22:34

Ds was a sock refusnik too.. hated them! Still does. He hates shoes too!

PIL bought my 2 children some bedroom slippers last year & now everytime they see them they ask why they're in their bare feet & not wearing their "nice warm slippers"

Yesterday morning I even found FIL trying to stuff ds's feet into a pair of Thomas bedroom slippers... he was wearing a feckin sleepsuit with feet in it

edam · 02/12/2007 22:34

When I see babies with no socks or shoes on, I just think 'oh yes, I remember those days'. Ds would not keep socks on. Kicked holes in his buggy cosytoes thingy, too.

ScottishMummy · 02/12/2007 22:35

lol,kicked holes thats determined

ilovecake · 02/12/2007 22:48

We are often sockless in this house. Unless shoes are tightly on then they and the socks are pulled off by DS 18mths- often racing out the door to collect DD from school and pop DS in buggy without socks / shoes and try to cover him up with blanket which he of course throws off to show everyone how neglectful I am! Also does the same with mittens / hat in this cold weather - what can you do?

ScottishMummy · 02/12/2007 22:50

do nowt we all have foibles - even wee uns sock Schmock

jinglebells2shoessmells · 02/12/2007 22:58

just tickle them.then wait and see if there is a thread on here about a madwoman tickle random tots feet

SquonkaClaus · 02/12/2007 22:59

all my kids have refused to have a rain cover on their pushchair as well.

Dd1 used to stick her head out of the side, ds just removes it - he has worked out that if he pulls hard enough, the velcro just detaches

ScottishMummy · 02/12/2007 23:04

used to squawk my brass necked apologies, but what the hell cant force 'em

LyraSilvertongue · 02/12/2007 23:05

DS2 often removes his socks and shoes in winter while out in his pushchair. He's 3 and old enough to know his feet will get cold but he does it anyway. If I put them back on, they're off again within a couple of minutes.
I often get disapproving looks as if I'm neglecting my child. Maybe that was you, mummyloveslucy. Stop being so judgemental.

amytheearwaxbanisher · 02/12/2007 23:07

my ds has the rain cover problem too sticks his head out at the bottom easier to not put it on and run a hundred miles an hour to my car

mylittlepudding · 03/12/2007 06:42

I have an escape artist too. I put her in a snowsuit if it's really cold but it's a bit impractical for my nearly-toddler, even more so for 2 and 3 year olds etc I am sure. I have not found any mittens that stay on. Hats also. I think if you don't have a particularly wilful child in a certain area it is hard to understand those of us that do.

mintchips · 03/12/2007 11:51

Ds (nearly 2) is always taking his shoes and socks off when in the buggy- I've lost so many socks that I have bought a couple of pairs tights for him- but he doesn't wear them everyday.

We were in town the other day and he had one bare foot and I lost count of the amount of people who said "do you know you've lost a shoe and sock?"

He even kicks the cosy toes off!
