20th Anniversary of 9/11. Would you feel safe visiting London?

We’ve booked tickets to a show on that date, tickets to go on the London eye etc, a nice day out.

My mother has gone to pieces as it’s the 20th anniversary of the terror attack and due to the recent events in Afghanistan she thinks there may be a higher risk of something happening. I hadn’t even thought about it to be honest!

She thinks we should cancel but we’ve spent a lot on tickets and we are looking forward to it.

Now she’s put the idea in my mind I’m worried.

Please tell me she’s being ridiculous!

Security will be tight in major cities across the world due to the anniversary so I should think London will be safer than any other day.

TheBodyPiercer · 31/08/2021 21:21

Terror threats are being intercepted constantly, you just don't always know about it.

If you live your life in fear then the terrorists have already won.

I'm sure you'll have a wonderful day.

Dreambigger · 31/08/2021 21:22

She's being ridiculous..have fun

ThinWomansBrain · 31/08/2021 21:22

London's population is somewhere around 9m - what does she think London residents are going to do? Mass exodus?

IWasBornInAThunderstorm · 31/08/2021 21:26

It's about how safe you feel. If you don't think you'll feel safe then don't go. If you feel safe going then go. It's not really something any of us can answer as fear is a personal thing and we all have different appetites for risk.

I personally would feel safe.

Againstmachine · 31/08/2021 21:27

Did she panic around 7/7 as thats more relevant to London.

PinkiOcelot · 31/08/2021 21:29

That wouldn’t enter my head.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 31/08/2021 21:42

Well considering 9/11 didn’t happen in London I’d feel absolutely fine about it.

Throckmorton · 31/08/2021 21:46

She's being ridiculous

Roominmyhouse · 31/08/2021 21:48

I think they are probably a bit busy with what’s going on in Afghanistan to be planning major terrorist attacks right. But even if they are you have to be seriously unlucky to get caught up in one. You can’t change your plans on the basis something bad could happen when it’s highly unlikely to!

NailsNeedDoing · 31/08/2021 21:49

It wouldn’t even occur to me to worry about it. She’s being silly, in that weird way that lots of people are about London.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 31/08/2021 21:50

Ignore her!

NoYOUbekind · 31/08/2021 21:51

I wouldn't even give it a moment's thought, to be honest.

ddl1 · 31/08/2021 21:55

I might worry slightly about Covid, depending on the level of precautions being taken, but NOT about terrorism more than at any other time. Security is likely to be very tight; and there is no evidence that extremists have used anniversaries of that day for attempting violent attacks.

Zarene · 31/08/2021 21:56

Of course! I’m sorry, I think considering cancelling is a bit silly.

Dongdingdong · 31/08/2021 21:58

Seriously Hmm

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 31/08/2021 21:58

Yes, she’s being ridiculous. Have a lovely day.

frogswimming · 31/08/2021 21:58

I don't think terrorists care about anniversaries.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 31/08/2021 22:02

For goodness sake. Go, enjoy yourself and celebrate the sheer joy of being alive. The more people act hysterically about “what ifs” the more power we hand to the terrorists. After all, the overarching aim of terrorism is just that- to cause terror. The means are irrelevant to them.

NeverEnoughCake2 · 31/08/2021 22:05

In the nicest possible way, she's being a bit daft. Also, and I say this as someone who got back on public transport to go to her job in London on 8/7, when we restrict ourselves out of fear, the terrorists have achieved their goal.

Statistically, you're far more likely to be seriously hurt crossing the road in London than in a terror attack. So, enjoy your planned day out, but keep an eye on the traffic!

PicaK · 31/08/2021 22:09

7/7 more significant for London.

annacondom · 31/08/2021 22:11

She is being ridiculous.

Peckhampalace · 31/08/2021 22:12

I live in London, hadn't given this a thought, and now I have, it won't affect my plans in any way.
Something might happen I suppose, but much (much much) more likely nothing will on that day.

Spongeboob · 31/08/2021 22:13

She's being ridiculous. I went to London two days after the Manchester bombing, there was no amped up security anywhere I saw though I'd read that there would be armed police everywhere. If there was intelligence received that there was a threat then additional security would be implemented. Fear of going somewhere within your own country on the 20th anniversary of a terrorist attack that occurred in another country is daft.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 31/08/2021 22:16

What?!
This honestly wouldn’t even cross my mind.

I live in London though so I guess I think people thinking it’s ‘unsafe’ to visit is just ridiculous.
