Career change advice needed

Hi everyone, I feel stuck and hopeless and I need advice.
I have a foundation degree in Business Management, I was stupid enough to not finish my last year of uni because I found a job that was paying well (in the middle of the recession back in my country). After that I moved to England 5 years ago and I worked as a translator and in admin jobs until I had my son and I stayed home for a year. Now I'm looking to go back to work and I think my bad decision has caught up with me and I don't seem to be able to even get an interview. I got offered a position I was excited about but then they told me in a nice way that they chose a young graduate instead. I want to go back to uni for a top up year and get my degree but I don't know what to do after that. I like hr and accounting and I need some advice on how to pursue these and how hard it will be. Ideally I'd become a chartered accountant but I don't know if I would even be considered. I'm just 27 and I feel like I will never be financially stable.

If you want to go into accounting, I would apply to study that rather than your final degree year. At the same time, I'd look for junior finance roles, and in time you may well find your employer might contribute a proportion towards your accountancy exams. You'll also be a more attractive candidate if you can show you're already working towards your accounting qualification. And at 27 you are nowhere near too old!

27? You are still young OP. Go for it. You have so much time, my advice is just get on and do it.

If you want to be a chartered accountant get a training contract - don’t bother with a degree - it just delays things.

On the job training will prepare you much better.

Lots of the bigger firms have school leaver schemes which you might be eligible for.

My 20 yo auditor last year was top notch. No tuition fees and newly qualified out earning graduates by a fair margin.

Thank you everyone I was very upset yesterday. I will see if I can start working towards the qualification on my own and hopefully find an employer for the training. If anyone can explain the way the tuition works when you pay on your own I would appreciate it, it's a bit confusing on the website!
