to expect dishwasher tablets?

foxychox · 31/08/2021 11:26

We had a week in an AirBNB last week. It was a seaside chalet, but very well equipped and included a dishwasher. When the keys were handed over I was advised on how to use the washer and dryer if I needed them so my expectation was that all appliances were for use. Over the first couple of days we used dishes and stacked the dishwasher, when it was full I hunted around but no dishwasher tablets to be found. Salt and rinse aid, yes but not tablets. Washing up liquid, washing liquid and fabric conditioner all evident. From then on we washed dishes as we used them (even though there was a only a very well used scourer available) but left the dishwasher as was - all items had been rinsed prior to putting in so no smell etc.
When we left I messaged the owner to say we had a great stay and had stacked the DW but as there were no tablets had not put it on. Her response was that she expected that we should wash all the dishes by hand prior to leaving.
AIBU in that if there is a dishwasher we should be able to use it? And that the property should include detergent for this? I have another AirBNB stay coming up in a couple of months so need to be prepared to take my own if this is not the norm (it has been for the other 2 that we have done)....

Doesn't it say in the details what is provided?

Our host was a superhost and very definitely deserved the title. She was lovely, and we didn't want for anything. We had a lovely welcome pack with a bottle of wine and loads of goodies from the local farm shop.

When we holiday in the UK we do push the boat out a little because you can't always expect good weather so having nice accommodation is more important. I would go back to where we stayed in a heartbeat.

Also, whenever we have done self catering in the UK we have always left the place clean and tidy.

LittleRedPill · 31/08/2021 18:29

I’ve stayed in many UK holiday cottages and IME you cannot bank on dishwasher tablets being provided. Sometimes they are but it’s not a given.

It was really skanky and unreasonable to leave the dishwasher full of dirty dishes. Yuk.

woodhill · 31/08/2021 18:31

I would have taken some or bought a box and left 1 or 2 behind

When you stay in USA there was nothing in cupboards in some places

PheasantsNest · 31/08/2021 18:33

So rude to leave unwashed dishes.

woodhill · 31/08/2021 18:33

@Bingomangoes

We have an Airbnb, when we started it we used to supply everything, but quickly realised that many guests assume anything not nailed down is theirs to take home, entire cleaning sprays, laundry liquid, entire bags of DW tabs, large family sized hand soap dispensers and hand creams from bathroom sinks, so now we leave exactly 7 DW tabs, measily individual little soap bars and no lovely handcream in bathrooms. Anyway, off point, but I think the owners should leave enough DW tabs for the stay it costs hardly anything and makes your guests stay much easier but in the event DW tabs werent there you don't just leave dirty dishes, new guests are probably arriving just a few hours after you leave at this time of year, seems like an odd decision.
So dishonest
rookiemere · 31/08/2021 18:34

I don't understand all the angst.

My self catering staples are a bag with cafetiere ( usually provided these days but can't live without coffee ), dishwasher tablets, laundry capsules, soap, foil & cling film and some salt. I don't bring lightbulbs because they are part of fixtures and fittings and also there are many different types of lightbulbs so I'd be unlikely to have the right ones Smile.

They aren't going to list how many dishwasher tabs they provide, in the same way that they don't tell you how many toilet rolls are given.

People should try self catering abroad, for German people I believe it's considered unclean to leave anything.

UmamiMammy · 31/08/2021 18:38

We book a few holiday rentals a year and I never assume there will be dishwasher tablets and laundry liquid provided............sometimes there is and I consider that a bonus!
YWBveryU to leave unwashed dished when you left!!!!

YWBveryU to leave unwashed dished when you left!!!!

For the hard of thinking, the OP has said 'we did actually run the DW without a tablet as better than nothing.'

Sadiecow · 31/08/2021 19:23

@IntermittentParps the OP clearly states in wasn't put on!

So not sure who is hard of thinking? Maybe more a drip feed when OP was called out on it?

IntermittentParps · 31/08/2021 19:26

Sadie, what do you take it to mean when the OP says we did actually run the DW without a tablet as better than nothing.?

Sadiecow · 31/08/2021 19:45

@IntermittentParps

So why, did the OP, state

*When we left I messaged the owner to say we had a great stay and had stacked the DW but as there were no tablets had not put it on. Her response was that she expected that we should wash all the dishes by hand prior to leaving.
*

That says she had not put it on? What do you take from that? Maybe after being handed her arse on a plate, she changed the story!

Are you really that hard of thinking?

234Pepperplant · 31/08/2021 19:53

“Not directly comparable, are they? You don't do a Tesco shop expecting extra food; you do book a place to live in and run as a household for a period of time, and you expect the cost of it to cover basics. Especially if there is a dishwasher in the place.”

I don’t regard supplying dishwasher tablets as “basics”. I think this is where we fundamentally disagree - I regard dishwasher tabs and toilet paper as equivalent to food, you see them as equivalent to lightbulbs.

However in twenty odd years of self catering I’ve had precisely one blown lightbulb, which was one of four in the room. We coped. I’ll risk not taking bulbs.

Brakebackcyclebot · 31/08/2021 19:55

Why on earth didn't you just buy some? YABU

Because they cost £3 and OP wants to be a martyr!

I'd have just sloshed some washing up liquid in the machine and put it in on a high setting, would have done the job just fine I'm sure.

The Airbnb cleaning fees are so unreasonably high that I definitely wouldn't feel bad about it. We've definitely left unwashed wine glasses etc at various Airbnbs over the years and never got a bad review over it.

Oh please try that when you set your DW tonight Grin
moynomore · 31/08/2021 20:34

Oh wow. You absolutely should have just splurged and bought some tablets. Leave a couple for the next guests and take the rest home. You can't leave dirty dishes.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/08/2021 20:37

That sounds like it would end in a similar way to the time I unwisely put bubble bath in a spa bath in a B&B.

Don't try this at home folks.

ThinWomansBrain · 31/08/2021 20:42

whenever I've rented cottages, there has been plenty of cleaning stuff, including DW tablets if there's a dishwasher - if there wasn't any there, I'd just buy some.

Pendhxa · 31/08/2021 20:43

I’d have run it without a tab.

You can’t put ordinary fairy liquid type squirty stuff in dishwashers unless you wish to host a foam party.

My DH did this once! Hilarious! Knee deep in bubbles.
Newkitchen123 · 31/08/2021 20:46

You don't need to go shopping as such for dishwasher tablets. In 4 days did you not pass a spar? Couple of quid, press the button, job done!
Very unreasonable to leave it full, washing without a tablet is not washing. I would either have bought some or just washed them. If I had bought some I would have run the dishwasher and emptied it. I assume that it was empty when you got there. Clean dishes in the cupboard? Leave as you find.

PattyPan · 31/08/2021 20:49

If I turned up at a self catering place and it didn’t have any soap or washing up liquid I’d consider it bizarrely stingy and I would never expect to have to provide these things myself, nor pillows or toilet paper.
Given a dishwasher is included I think dishwasher tablets are akin to WUL here and should be provided. It’s also very weird that there was rinse aid and salt but no tablets.

DroopyClematis · 31/08/2021 20:55

Whilst I agree that you shouldn't have left your dishes in the dishwasher, the owners should have left one or two tabs to keep you going while you got your own while there.

We've been taking UK cottage holidays for nigh on 30 years. It's been hit and miss.
Having spoken to owners, over the years, it's become apparent that quite a few folk feel that ( like at breakfast time in a hotel) that ' I've paid for it, we'll take it.'
So many cottage owners don't like to leave a box of dishwasher tabs, laundry tabs, fabric conditioner, salt, pepper, washing up liquid, even tea towels as some folk just take it all! Just because they feel entitled to.

We always take our own provisions , however, we once flew to Inverness ( we're in Kent) as it was too far to drive ( I'm scared if motorways so driving is down to my husband) and we hired a car to our remote cottage, with young children.

There was barely anything. One medium sized saucepan, one small baking sheet, half( yes!) a scouring pad, half ( yes again!) dishcloth and one grill pan.
No dishwasher tabs, washing tabs, fabric conditioner, washing up liquid, soap, shower gel, toilet cleaner , clothes line, drier, pegs and one toilet roll.
Given that we'd flown, we didn't stock up... just assumed.
It was about 12 miles to a convenience store.

Basically, take a few essential bits if you can and grab more bits before you get there.

roolz · 31/08/2021 21:00

I was going to say Yanbu until ragib you left the dirty dishes. You even mentioned that they had fabric conditioner etc and the stay was nice

How can you leave dirty dishes? Just bleugh. And yes, they are dirty if they've just been rinsed and left in a dishwasher. Just wow, how can there be washing up liquid and a sponge- and you just stuff your dirty dishes in the dishwasher for someone else?
