to expect dishwasher tablets?

We had a week in an AirBNB last week. It was a seaside chalet, but very well equipped and included a dishwasher. When the keys were handed over I was advised on how to use the washer and dryer if I needed them so my expectation was that all appliances were for use. Over the first couple of days we used dishes and stacked the dishwasher, when it was full I hunted around but no dishwasher tablets to be found. Salt and rinse aid, yes but not tablets. Washing up liquid, washing liquid and fabric conditioner all evident. From then on we washed dishes as we used them (even though there was a only a very well used scourer available) but left the dishwasher as was - all items had been rinsed prior to putting in so no smell etc.
When we left I messaged the owner to say we had a great stay and had stacked the DW but as there were no tablets had not put it on. Her response was that she expected that we should wash all the dishes by hand prior to leaving.
AIBU in that if there is a dishwasher we should be able to use it? And that the property should include detergent for this? I have another AirBNB stay coming up in a couple of months so need to be prepared to take my own if this is not the norm (it has been for the other 2 that we have done)....

It's mean they didn't leave any, but I wouldn't have left dirty dishes. You could have messaged on the first day asking if there were any...

foxychox · 31/08/2021 12:41

Message received loud and clear, I should not expect tablets and will take my own for my next stay.
To address a few points - we were there Monday pm to Friday am so not quite a week, we didn't go shopping at all as I took some food and we ate out, and we did actually run the DW without a tablet as better than nothing.
I must have been lucky with my other stays!

Its rude to leave dirty dishes festering in the dishwasher for days on end for your host to find. Just wash them by hand or buy some tablets fgs. If it was my place, I wouldn't be letting you stay again. Like pp have said, its a bonus if there are adequate washing tablets, dishwasher tablets, loo rolls etc. Just take your own or buy it when there, its not difficult!

234Pepperplant · 31/08/2021 12:45

“ The Airbnb host should have provided adequate cleaning materials inc. dishwasher tablets if they expect you to wash the dishes.
Common sense surely?”

No. It’s self catering accommodation. That means you provide your own consumables unless told otherwise in the listing. Of course you’re expected to wash your own flipping dishes - that’s not an end of tenancy cleaning thing that’s just normal hygiene. It’s no more “cleaning” than flushing the toilet is cleaning the bathroom.

I’d not expect to provide my own vacuum cleaner, in all but the cheapest caravan sites I expect a starter toilet roll as a courtesy and I think cleaning sprays etc are a bit of a grey area, but dishwasher tablets, tin foil, food, salt, oil, toiletries etc etc are on you to provide.

XingMing · 31/08/2021 12:45

We book SC accommodation a couple of times a year, and there has always been a starter supply of dishwasher tablets (generally one per day). Any more we buy or bring from home, along with tea bags, coffee and sharp knives.

CoronaPeroni · 31/08/2021 12:47

So glad there was washing up liquid, imagine the sink filling up with dirty dishes day by day if there wasn't any!

Thighdentitycrisis · 31/08/2021 12:48

I don’t expect washing up liquid or any detergent because clearly if it’s supplied people take the whole bottle home. It’s nice if they leave a token amount.

I do however expect a new washing up sponge and cloth to wipe surface. Nobody is going to take this home - and nobody wants a used one in their holiday let either

I take a sponge and jcloth because they take up no room in packing

The key to it all is communication
The host needs to say in advance what is there and guests need to read and/or ask

Well done for reading the replies and holding your hands up to being unreasonable! It's so rare on AIBU!

But, also be warned that posters will continue to tell you how unreasonable you are because they won't actually read this post before commenting...

You left your dirty dishes in the dishwasher Shock

TheOrigRights · 31/08/2021 12:54

In all the self catering accommodation I've stayed in, there's been either plentiful of such things or enough for a couple of days, in which case you buy more. If there was none I'd think it was an oversight, buy some and not mention it.

Gross to have left your dirty dishes while you were staying there and rude not to have cleaned them before you left

Bagamoyo1 · 31/08/2021 12:54

Imagine if there was no loo roll!
BingBongToTheMoon · 31/08/2021 12:55

There was washing up liquid…..but you still left your dirty dishes unwashed inside the dishwasher?!
I did read your response holding your hands up with regards to no dishwasher tablets….but you could still have washed the dishes.

RevolutionRadio · 31/08/2021 12:55

We've been lucky in accommodation as so far there have always been a couple of tablets for the washing machine/dishwasher in the cupboard when we got there.

We do always take some with us as they're not always included and sometimes you need more than they have provided. We also take cloths/sponge for washing up, a tea towel, general cleaning spray, a sharp knife, tongs, and toilet roll.

FawnFrenchieMum · 31/08/2021 13:00

I've have thought they would have left one or two for the first day but then would have expected to buy my own.

We recently stayed in a property that we have forgotten had a dishwasher so didn't take any. There were three in the welcome pack, so we went and bought a pack, we then found some more under the sink! We still used a couple we had bought and just brought the rest home.

I honestly can't believe you left a week old dishes in the dishwasher.

PrincessNutella · 31/08/2021 13:03

OP cannot be serious, this must be a set up.

HellonHeels · 31/08/2021 13:06

@Senorasurf

You wouldn't expect shampoo so why expect dishwasher tablets?
I would expect shampoo though. And soap. All the holiday lets I've stayed in have supplied cleaning products and soap, shampoo etc.
Miniroofbox · 31/08/2021 13:07

It’s self catering though?

3Br1tnee · 31/08/2021 13:09

What a fucking minger. Why wouldn't you just buy some and take them home with you? Or if you don't have one, I really can't believe you would leave dirty dishes behind. Jesus.

RedToothBrush · 31/08/2021 13:09

You are lazy if you didn't wash up your stuff.

You could have gone and bought dishwasher tablets if you are that precious about your hands. You had washing up liquid provided.

I don't expect dishwasher tabs. I always take some because its not always a given you will get them.

BoredZelda · 31/08/2021 13:10

When we left I messaged the owner to say we had a great stay and had stacked the DW but as there were no tablets had not put it on. Her response was that she expected that we should wash all the dishes by hand prior to leaving

I agree with her. You managed all week to wash dishes (rather than go and buy some dishwasher tablets) but on the last day left them for her? That’s a shitty thing to do.

Perhaps it was simply an oversight, these things can happen. It is unlikely they don’t provide them. Your response to it was petty.

downinthedoldrums · 31/08/2021 13:11

Next time (pandemic permitting) book through an agency. They will leave a little care package with a couple of dishwasher tablets to get you started. The AirBnB provider is an amateur who expected you to either bring your own or buy a big pack (which people who don't have dishwashers back home won't want to do). The AirBnB owner is not letting for holidays in a professional manner. Mention it in the review.

Ewock · 31/08/2021 13:12

Your update does not make it better, and I have read the full thread. However there was no reason for you not to take the dishes out and wash them by hand. I can not believe that you felt the best thing to do was leave dirty dishes in the dishwasher from Mon to Fri and expect someone else to clean them for you. Absolutely disgusting.
I always take tablets with us, sometimes there are a few left sometimes not. Either way I would never leave dirty dishes for someone else to clean.

Bagamoyo1 · 31/08/2021 13:12

I’m amazed that some people think everything should be provided. I’ve stayed in numerous holiday lets, and they range from having nothing at all, through having a couple of days of cleaning stuff, to having a full array of everything (including salt, pepper, pasta, ketchup etc).

I would expect as standard at least a couple of loo rolls, a washing up brush and a cloth for wiping services. Anything else is a bonus.

downinthedoldrums · 31/08/2021 13:12

BUT you should have just run the dishwasher without a tablet. There is generally enough detergent loitering in the system to manage a wash without a tablet as a one-off, plus it is a better option than leaving them wholly unwashed.

mrsbyers · 31/08/2021 13:15

I’d expect to buy some , during Covid especially we’ve found things like liquid soap and washing up liquid are not left for general use

£1 for a small pack
