Put your big girl pants on

Does anyone else find this comment irritating ?! I've seen it on a few recent threads, makes me cringe!!

OP posts:
NuffSaidSam · 31/08/2021 08:14

I think it's supposed to be irritating tbh.

I don't think it's literal advice.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 31/08/2021 08:18

No, that doesn't bother me. However "boils my piss" I think is revolting.

SpicyJalfrezi · 31/08/2021 08:23

I hate it. I think it is supposed to imply that the OP is a wimp, but a lot of the time MN confuses manners with passivity.

‘Put your big girl pants on and tell her NO.’ Well yes, you might need to say no, but there’s generally a way of doing that.

Cooroo · 31/08/2021 08:28

I hate it. They sound like my old school knickers, baggy and woolly. I wonder if it's American and actually means trousers?

traintraveller · 31/08/2021 08:50

There's lots of words and phrases on MN that make me cringe, can't say that is one of them.

Mercurial123 · 31/08/2021 09:15

It doesn't bother me. So may comments used regularly on MN are far more annoying.

Tal45 · 31/08/2021 09:19

It sounds condescending to me, I don't like it any more than I like 'man up'.

SethWho · 31/08/2021 09:21

I hate it. Like PP said reminds me of school knickers or some ridiculous bloomers.

LipstickLou · 31/08/2021 09:24

I have seen it used on a school support Facebook group and it implies courage. I think it works well there.

CustomerRelations · 31/08/2021 09:31

I also hate it

HarrietsChariot · 31/08/2021 09:36

It's the female equivalent of "man up" - another horrible phrase.

DrSbaitso · 31/08/2021 09:39

It's not a new idiom, here or anywhere else.

It is really annoying though.

MattDillonsEyebrows · 31/08/2021 09:54

I don't mind that one so much, whilst I don't use it, I see it as a phrase designed to motivate and encourage (albeit, in a bit of an annoying way).

The phrases I really hate are the current trendy ones 'Educate yourself!' and "Do better!' Angry

They mean nothing and are generally said to simply shut down a discussion.

Winniewonka · 31/08/2021 10:13

It's been around for at least ten years. I always took it to imply that you're acting 'grown up', moving from wearing nappies to 'big girl pants', which is an expression people do say to their children.

VeganVeal · 31/08/2021 11:12

It's just a saying, just suck it up and grow a pair Grin

dudsville · 31/08/2021 11:15

I presumed it was a MN alternative to "grow some..." or "man up and get it done".

phishy · 31/08/2021 11:53

At least it's unisex, as it works for boys too.

Big girl's blouse is worse.

mbosnz · 31/08/2021 12:15

I personally prefer my brother in law's 'reach into the pantry and grab a can of harden the fuck up', for this type of situation. Grin

SirenSays · 31/08/2021 12:31

I'd rather hear suck it up or do better. Bgp makes me think of Bridget Jones. Massive nana pants don't really say courage imo.

5128gap · 31/08/2021 12:35

The first time I heard it i thought it was funny. The person was saying it about gearing herself up for something though, not directing it as someone else. Like so many other phrases it's really overused now. It irritates me more when people say things like 'no is a complete sentence!' all dramatically, as though they're the first one to ever have uttered anything so profound.

This is what I think it means too. A bit like saying you're in the big girl's playground now.
