AIBU hanging pictures

SAYAAL · 30/08/2021 15:06

I moved into my new place a few weeks ago. Since then I have been hanging pictures etc with nails. I only do it during the day, pretty much just weekends and try to keep it under an hour - I have lots to hang. I haven’t hung anything in over a week. Today was hanging a new feature wall in my bedroom. I put in 11 nails and the neighbours started banging on wall yelling shut up. AIBU to hang my pictures. I appreciate I hung a lot but try to be considerate at the times/days I’m hanging. I have stopped for now but have more to do and will do it on Saturday. I’m within probation so don’t want to get a noise complaint but don’t know how to hang pictures otherwise.

I’m so confused by the neighbours and the responses. That’s really not a lot of banging at all and you’re entitled to decorate your place! What if you were building a wardrobe or something? Or fixing something?

Saying that, I spent a total of less than 3 minutes fixing the feet on my bedside table the other week and used a hammer for less than 1 minute cumulatively and my knob of a downstairs neighbour started shouting. It was mid-afternoon and she doesn’t work so it wasn’t about the time or anything. Honestly, some people are just ridiculous.

SAYAAL · 30/08/2021 15:25

I have tried the softer route, only go in with a hammer.

@SAYAAL

Ok then, they’re totally unreasonable. Just carry on - I would.
SAYAAL · 30/08/2021 15:28

I am really not the type to make much noise. It actually distresses me even using the hammer which is why I only do it for a short time and spread it out. I don’t like noises. Today alone I have heard a strimmer, someone hammering outside, Dogs going crazy and kids screaming. I only had 2 more things to hang but have stopped to show consideration but will need to finish on Saturday as one is a clock!

And using screws and rawlplugs doesn't? Ok then.

No, not really if done properly. It's much better than banging nails into plaster.

pinkyredrose · 30/08/2021 16:22

Don't use nails, use proper picture hooks. Easier to use and kinder to the wall.

SAYAAL · 30/08/2021 16:31

The drill make too much noise for me. It hurts my ears. Nails have always done fine for me and much easier to sort of and when moving.

Use ear defenders.
SAYAAL · 30/08/2021 16:37

If the neighbours are yelling at nails can you imaging if I drilled for each picture.

seaandsandcastles · 30/08/2021 16:41

A quick drill is better than repeated banging. There’s nothing worse.

There is a lot worse

My personal rule, which has no legal basis but a sound moral one, is: don’t do noisy DIY on a bank holiday, FFS.

lanthanum · 30/08/2021 17:02

You could always drop a note round saying that you're sorry, but you still have a few more pictures to hang - at the moment you're planning to do it next Saturday, but if there are times in the (non-working) week when they know they'll be out, you're happy to try and do it then.
It's not an unreasonable amount of noise, but they might appreciate warning/a bit of choice.

SAYAAL · 30/08/2021 17:07

I wasn’t planning on it. I was looking at walking and getting to know the area but I unfortunately rubbed the skin off the back of my heels and so am doing things around the house.

I think it's the little and often that's getting to your neighbour. Rather than a few hours continuous banging and it's done, my guess is it's become a potentially never ending job in their mind. 'Oh god, there she goes again'.

WTF475878237NC · 30/08/2021 17:24

Why aren't you using picture hooks?

Mseddy · 30/08/2021 17:29

I'd just watch and wait until I knew they where out and then get them all done. Well actually I wouldn't I'd just do it!! But you are obviously worried about upsetting them so that might be the easiest solution

SAYAAL · 30/08/2021 17:35

I only had them last two to do and then as far as I know I am done until I get a clock for the living room ( I somehow lost mine in the move) Hopefully 5 minutes on Saturday and it will be done. I have anxiety so was worrying that I had done something bad and wrong. My friends insist that the times I was doing it I am fine but do worry.

Look up Command Strips.

No banging.

muffinffaces · 30/08/2021 17:40

Gotta love mn sometimes. Apparently there is an acceptable limit on how many pictures people have on their walls

😁

muffinffaces · 30/08/2021 17:41

Why are you using nails instead of screws and rawl plugs?

You know it's completely normal to use nails

muffinffaces · 30/08/2021 17:43

don’t do noisy DIY on a bank holiday, FFS.

I though DIY was essential on bank holidays!

MrsRobbieHart · 30/08/2021 17:43

I’d have yelled back

“HAHAHAHA good one”

muffinffaces · 30/08/2021 17:44

This thread is mental!

OP you can put up as many pictures as you like using whatever hanging method your prefer

GrandmaSteglitszch · 30/08/2021 17:48

Wrap some cloth round the hammer head. It will make slightly less noise.

Look for a clock that doesn't need to hang on the wall.
