Been isolating for nearly a month......

Haven't left my house apart from urgent medical appointments. They're saying my covid test is still showing as positive. I'm literally losing the will to live here.......a month of being locked in doors and they want me to do another 10 days. I don't think I can take much more of this. I'm supposed to be having a baby in a week or 2. I have so much to get ready and I can't get anything finished. I did my 10 days, then another. Then another.
I've had enough. I feel like I'm going to crack up. How much longer can they expect someone to stay indoors? I have dutifully followed all their advice and they want me to do ANOTHER 10 days.

I’m a nurse who has worked on a covid ward for the last year. You do not need to re test, the hospital is being stupid getting you to test. The body can shed dead cells (covid cells) for up to 90 days after original infection date. Which means you can test positive 3 months after. The deal is after 10-14 days you are no longer infectious so can return to normal life and if you test positive after the 14 days it’s no advisable to do tests again for the rest of the 90 days.

Hospital staff work by these rules so why they are asking you to test is beyond me. Stop isolating, go back to normal life and either do a fake test or explain this to them and escalate your concerns to PALS team in the hospital.

YukoandHiro · 30/08/2021 11:11

Something doesn't add up here- you're not meant to repeat PCRs for 90 days after a positive for this reason. It's no longer accurate.

Are they just telling you to keep isolating to protect you ahead of the baby being born as you have additional liver issues etc?

Imnothereforthedrama · 30/08/2021 11:15

Agree with others stop testing go out .

dementedpixie · 30/08/2021 11:18

@FlamingLama

I had to go back into hospital at the weekend for further problems (my liver has been showing up some issues with the pregnancy) and they did another test then and treated me like I had leprosy in the process. it's still showing as positive evidently and test and trace have text to say have another 10 days. I don't think my sanity can take any more of this!
You arent supposed to test within 90 days of a positive test as fragments of the original infection can give a positive result even though you are no longer contagious. You do not need to keep isolating in the absence of symptoms
Marcee · 30/08/2021 11:18

YABU for keep testing yourself and isolating.

Its possible for tests to come back positive for up to 3 months at least. So refuse any more testing. And I wouldn't be isolating either

itsgrand · 30/08/2021 11:29

@FlamingLama

I will refuse any more tests, I didn't realise I had a choice in the matter.
don't know if this has already been suggested but you can download the nhs app and receive your proof of recovery and this should suffice instead of testing again. It's officially not recommended to test for about 90 days after a positive test......... you could be testing for the next three months and still be positive... you would never be out of isolation!!! Get your proof of recovery and show this to anyone or anywhere that is asking you to take a test. You don't have to test honestly.

@FlamingLama

I just did as I was told essentially. I didn't realise they were going to insist on constant tests every time I go in.......Saturday a consultant said to me "take it so it comes back negative and they'll leave you alone"
Are you glad you posted op? I feel like MN has released you from prison. I really feel for you!

The comment from your consultant. If it was worded that way, I'd infer from that that they were telling you to take the test in such a way that would mean it was definitely negative.
In other words, don't actually take the test. Just provide the test.

user1471478181 · 31/08/2021 07:52

My mum has this problem as a test when she went back to work it can stay in your system for quite a while (I think 3 months she got told I’m not sure )

ofwarren · 31/08/2021 07:55

I'm usually strict around testing and isolating but even I think you should totally ignore them and go out. That is ridiculous!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/08/2021 08:13

What everyone else said!!Confused

guiltynetter · 31/08/2021 08:45

Oh myyyy... You are being given such bad advice by all your medical professionals! EVERYBODY who has anything to do with covid in health care should know about the not retesting for 90 days rule as it can still show positive. I feel so sorry for you. Go out immediately and start getting ready for your baby.

LittleBearPad · 31/08/2021 15:27

I really hope you’re out and about OP.

Good luck with your baby

Why don't you just take this person's advice, OP?
LittleBearPad · 31/08/2021 15:45

Because after you’ve had Covid you’ll likely test positive for 90 days whilst not being infectious.

It was stupid advice from the consultant.

Oh my God...is it that hard to read between the lines?

Can you not see what he's telling her to do? It's pretty bloody clear to me!

TillyTopper · 31/08/2021 15:49

Saturday a consultant said to me "take it so it comes back negative and they'll leave you alone"

There's your answer then!

Mousecapade · 31/08/2021 15:49

You shouldn’t keep taking tests, you will be exempt from PCR for 90 days for this reason. It will keep showing up even if it’s inactive

Angel2702 · 31/08/2021 16:09

If you are isolating based on a text rather than a phone call they are automated texts sent out for a positive result. They won’t know that you had had covid within 90 days so after the first ten days you did not need to isolate and you shouldn’t be taking further tests.

LittleBearPad · 31/08/2021 16:53

@Rozziie I think you need to read what the consultant said. Any test isn’t going to test negative, it’s going to test positive. At which point test & trace will kick in because they don’t have the OP’s previous result.

Perhaps read the text not between the lines…

Apart from the fact it’s wrong.
icedcoffees · 31/08/2021 17:03

I voted YABU as you keep testing.

Just go out!

You still don't get it. LOL!!!!!

There IS a way a test will be negative, and this is what the consultant is very clearly hinting at. Unfortunately it seems to have gone over OP's head, and yours.

And you are calling other people stupid! Blush

ATieLikeRichardGere · 31/08/2021 17:07

This is sheer madness! Break free!

LittleBearPad · 31/08/2021 17:20

Absolutely @Rozziie so whilst a nurse watches the OP take the test (or even administers it) she’s meant to fake it every time she goes to hospital. Some actual medical advice based on fact might be more useful from the doctor

ToykotoLosAngeles · 31/08/2021 17:21

I don't understand. She said they did the tests, not she did them herself. My DS was swabbed by a nurse before going onto the ward and it was done in the lab. How are you supposed to get a negative test?
