To be annoyed with NHS 111

Iamacatslave · 30/08/2021 06:54

I phoned NHS 111 yesterday at 11.30am. and I am still waiting for a GP to call me back. I need to increase my meds by 25mg and am unable to do this by cutting my 50mg tablets in half. The advisor I spoke to said I needed a new prescription and a GP would call me back in 2 hours. I have phoned back several times, only to be told they are very busy and will phone. And I really don’t want to waste time at A&E for a prescription.

@RockallMalinHebrides
It’s a hospital prescription and was originally dispensed from the hospital pharmacy.

If it is a copy of a hospital out patient script that it won't be valid in a community pharmacy.

TrufflyPig · 30/08/2021 13:10

Don't worry OP, it's a stressful situation. In all honesty I think you have done all you can. 111 triage in order of clinical priority and whilst understandably upsetting for you it is not likely they will see it as urgent.

Please don't attempt to modify your dose or play around with the capsules yourself, phenytoin is particularly dangerous in overdose and there is potential to do that with fairly small dose increases.

Call your usual pharmacy who supplies your medication and ask for an emergency prescription in 25 mgs.

cultkid · 30/08/2021 13:11

Go to the pharmacy with the script !!

RockallMalinHebrides · 30/08/2021 13:13

It's not a regular repeat medication - the community pharmacy will not be able to legally issue.

it's not a script.
TrufflyPig · 30/08/2021 13:27

A community pharmacy will not issue an emergency supply of medication that has never been issued to a patient before.

cultkid · 30/08/2021 14:17

It has been issued before

Go see your local pharmacist and see what they say

RockallMalinHebrides · 30/08/2021 14:20

No it hasn’t
cultkid · 30/08/2021 14:30

Yes it has its the same drug she's already on at a higher dose

If she has a relationship with her chemist they can likely help her out here for a few days and so could 111

She is already on this medication
She has been written up for more

I would take it to my local hospital pharmacy if it is a hospital issue script

It is a script she has one ladies

jimmyhill · 30/08/2021 14:40

You can't split a capsule in half, they are in capsules for a reason, to control when and how they are absorbed.

Iamacatslave · 30/08/2021 14:47

Had a call back from an advisor apologising for the delay. I am on their list and will be called by a GP today.

Iamacatslave · 30/08/2021 14:49

My local pharmacy is closed today. I will update when I receive a call from a GP.

Just received a call from OOH GP. She can’t prescribe the 25mg as it’s not on my repeat prescription list, only the 50mg is on my repeat list. I need to phone my GP tomorrow and request the 25 mg. Thanks again for all your messages even the batshit ones.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/08/2021 15:13

Pharmacists can only prescribe exactly what the GP has written. Our GP prescribed ds a child's inhaler mask once instead of an adults and we had to go back to the GP for another prescription.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/08/2021 15:14

** my point being even if it was open they wouldn't be able to help.

cultkid · 30/08/2021 15:19

Fuck sake

Sorry OP

Hope you get help tomorrow xx

TrufflyPig · 30/08/2021 15:58

No, the pharmacy could not, this would not be a legal emergency supply. OP's relationship with them will not change this. She has not been prescribed the strength that she is requesting before.

TrufflyPig · 30/08/2021 15:59

Sorry to hear that OP, hopefully you will get sorted tomorrow.

I may well start an emergency supply thread with the facts on it, I don't think the pharmacy profession has done very well in communicating these facts to the public.

Iamacatslave · 30/08/2021 16:14

@TeuffyPig

Thank you. Good idea to start a thread about emergency medication supply.

YANBU OP. My DH phoned them at 9am and we finally heard back from them at 9pm. I also had to phone them about my 3 year old DS and by 10.30pm I still hadn't heard back from them, so I phoned them and said you know what don't bother I will speak to my GP on Tuesday and then I had an interrogation about why I was cancelling the call back. Erm because he is 3, exhausted and keeping him up was getting to be worse for his health.

cultkid · 30/08/2021 17:00

@TrufflyPig I would actually love that

Suzi888 · 30/08/2021 17:03

I’d empty the capsule and try to divide the powder Flowers sorry you are in pain.

No it hasn’t - we could not legally issue a different strength. Don’t try and tell me my job.

Sorry to hear OP that the Out of Hours couldn’t help.
