@MurielSpriggs

MN will tell you to live in the left hand lane because middle lane hoggers cause problems to those overtaking.

This is not something made up by MN. The highway code tells you to do this.

It is but what it (and mumsnet) doesn’t account for is that in general Lane 1 is full of lorries travelling much more slowly than 70, and therefore the cars in Lane 2 are almost always overtaking something constantly, especially on the busy motorways. Therefore they’re not ‘hogging’ Lane 1, it’s that the traffic in that lane is moving faster. On the part of the M1 I use regularly it’s often lorries nose to tail in two lanes and it’s impossible to stay left because at 70 you’re always going faster than them.

But that’s not lane hogging. I frequently drive on the four lane section of the A1M. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve pulled out to overtake someone in lane 3 and moved over to the empty lane 1 and still they sit there oblivious overtaking nothing in two empty lanes!

I think we both agree. Follow the highway code and stay in the left hand lane unless you're overtaking.

@tanguero

Drive with your HEADLIGHTS ON, ALL THE TIME......not so that you can see, but so that people are more aware of you. This is pretty much standard practise now, anyway.
Who does this?! This is not common. You do not need your headlights on during the day, unless it's bad visibility due to poor weather etc.

Everyone who drives a car purchased since 2011 when it was made compulsory for headlights to be on at all times.

Mine are on all the time.

DRLs are not normally headlights. When the headlights are switched on the DRLs are often switched off or dimmed.

My mistake. You’re right, of course.
