There was an extensive thread on this a couple of weeks ago.

TheVolturi · 29/08/2021 20:23

Eh?

SquirryTheSquirrel · 29/08/2021 20:25

I haven't noticed MN encouraging it. FWIW I have never used it and have no plans to.

Ah, haven't seen that. Fair enough.

TheVolturi · 29/08/2021 20:34

I don't understand how it's destroying communities?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 29/08/2021 20:36

Well between Airbnb and second homes we are experiencing a shortage of staff for pubs, hotels etc as families are being priced out of the market or can’t rent and there goes your teenage summer workers

FiveGoMadInDorset · 29/08/2021 20:41

We are also a fairly rural with an above average elderly population, by shrinking the rental pool you are also taking away accommodation from care workers plus other essential workers needed to keep the world turning

Housing stock is removed from the pool available for local people.

A decline in permanent residents leads to a decline in services, such as schools and doctors.

An increase in highly transient occupation leads to increased antisocial behaviour and pressures on resources such as parking.

Seasonal peaks and troughs lead to deserted towns in winter with very little resident population, who are often left with very few or no open shops, pubs etc during the low seasons.

Residents work is often seasonal and poorly paid as permanent jobs are scarce, as there is no or very small permanent community.

TheVolturi · 29/08/2021 20:43

Sorry for my ignorance, this is the first I have heard about this!

Depends where you live. In some areas, lots of holiday rentals = reliance on tourism, too many seasonal jobs, rising house prices means the area is unaffordable for locals, local facilities close because not used by tourists (eg school, library, community centres, GP surgery)

But at least tourists do spend money locally, so they support the economy. For my part, I have a bigger issue with second homes that sit empty for most of the year

TSSDNCOP · 29/08/2021 20:48

Everyone I know that is an Air BnB host (rough count 8 people) lives in the same village or has the letting property on their land.

tootingbeclido · 29/08/2021 20:50

Yes. .and of course 2nd homes are an issue too

Noroiscoming · 29/08/2021 20:52

This happened in Santorini. Every house, flat, room, shed, and cave was rented out as an Airbnb so the workers had nowhere to live. The campsites had more workers than tourists staying in them.
