To think if you can cut your own kids hair well then going to the barber's is a waste of money

Just that really.

Why spend £20 a pop having your kids hair cut at the barber's when you can do it well enough at home for free?

(Backstory: DH isn't good with money and always spending unnecessarily)

I cut DD hair. I wouldn’t if they wanted a more tricky style though. I don’t think children need to look good in order to feel good. How they look just shouldn’t be that significant to them or anyone else.

I don’t have teenagers though!

We did the kids hair in lockdown and it was passable, but now they are back to the barbers and look so much better!

I think a home haircut is usually quite obvious, not that it matters, but it usually doesn’t look that great. SIL is cutting her kids hair and whilst she has done a good job, it very much looks like a home haircut.

I’d just try to find a cheaper place to get it done professionally!

I don’t think everyone needs a fancy cut to feel good. My 12 year old son hates the barbers and prefers a simple cut from his dad. He has very little interest in his hair. They are people on Mumsnet obsessed with hair though and willing to spend hundreds on it in order to feel good.

I pay £5 for the barber to cut my son's hair. I do DH's at home with clippers for free. No. 1 all over wouldn't look great on DS though and I can't do his nicely myself so happy to pay.
YABU to pay £20 for a kids haircut!

MyPatronusIsACat · 30/08/2021 11:59

100% agree. I got a Nicky Clarke kit some 7 years ago, and have been doing DH's hair ever since.

Always took the kids to the hairdressers as they were choosy and fussy and would have been embarrassed at 'mum' doing their hair, but we have save a shit load on barbers fees since 2015! Possibly £600 or more, for the cost of one £40 kit from Boots.

I have been doing my own hair (making my mousy-ish hair more blonde, AND trimming it.) since the beginning of the first lockdown. After doing ti for 16 months now, I am quite a dab hand at it, and my hair looks the same as when the hairdresser did it.

So I won't be going back to the hairdresser.

I do think though @Bubblemac that you shouldn't be scrimping and saving on ANYthing just because your DH is shit with money!

I did DH & DS hair in lockdown, I’m not a trained hairdresser and it was passable but not great tbh. Hairdressing is a skill and it’s unlikely you’ll get a decent result, albeit it might be relatively ok.
I would look around for a cheaper barbers, we pay £7.50 for a kids short back and sides with clippers and scissors on top.
The 9 year old might start complaining about a home hair cut if his friends say something to him. Kids can be cruel.

My friend cuts her son's hair. She thinks it looks fine. It really, really doesn't.

@seaandsandcastles

YABU. You can always tell when an untrained person has cut a child’s hair and “neat and tidy” rarely looks good.
Rubbish. Depends on the hair, style and probably age of child. I cut my 3 year old's hair and strangers on the bus and the like are forever commenting on how pretty it is (blonde, curly, toddler cute). My friend cuts her 4 year old daughter's very straight hair in a bob and it looks exactly the same as the 2 times she took her to the hairdresser. I would never ever have anyone other than a hairdresser cut my own hair but cutting a preschool girl's hair seems to require little more than a good pair of scissors and a steady hand.
