to ask for your DFL (down from London) stories

Living in the West Country and we are currently inundated with tourists. Great to have the money in the local economy and I hope they have a lovely time on the beach. However, some are obviously from cities and have no idea what life is like here.
We call them DFL - down from London. (they may be from other places tho)
Most worrying is the lack of knowledge about tides, rips, crumbly cliffs etc, and the sheer rudeness to hospitality staff. Plus they drive shiny 4x4 Landrovers that can't squeeze into a passing place without the parking sensors going off and they can't back up on the lanes.
Last week I heard one say 'Where has all the beach gone? I'm sure there was a lot more sand this morning'

Sounds sneery.

I suppose you never visit anywhere you’re unfamiliar with?

And no, before you ask, I’m not from London or any other urban place.

LEMtheoriginal · 28/08/2021 18:09

We had a DFL say, oh its very beachy here!! Err thats because YOURE ON THE BEACH ! Me and dd were pissing ourselves.

Walkingtheplank · 28/08/2021 18:10

My parents live by the seaside. Always banging on about DFLs despite themselves once owning a hotel and benefiting from. Of course when I visit them I am myself a DFL.

All sounds pretty bigoted to me. It's just people trying to have a nice time on holiday. People from the country dont necessarily understand city life either but it doesn't make anyone better than anyone else.

NautaOcts · 28/08/2021 18:11

This feels a bit mean

LEMtheoriginal · 28/08/2021 18:12

Not sneery at all. We are in the south east in a place very popular with DFLs. They bring their money and a trendy vibe with them, they are welcome afaic . Also my DP is one.

AnnaDyne · 28/08/2021 18:13

Mean spirited thread.

mibbelucieachwell · 28/08/2021 18:14

I used to laugh at tourists visiting the Scottish island I grew up on. So funny that they didn't know to wear warm clothes on the boat in the summer and their excitement at seeing seals was hilarious. When I was a child.

Pigeonpocket · 28/08/2021 18:14

As if all people from London have only ever lived in a city their whole life Hmm

plodalong12 · 28/08/2021 18:16

I predict this thread will not end well.

GreenWheat · 28/08/2021 18:19

I was thinking of starting a thread about country bumpkins that don't know how to use a diagonal pedestrian crossing or navigate the tube. But then I thought, "ooh hang on, people are from different places and maybe instead of being so superior I should help them next time....."

Pinkchocolate · 28/08/2021 18:19

Why does peoples lack of knowledge on tides and cliffs bother you? I’m asking as a Londoner who is neither rude to service staff nor drives a 4x4 but has no idea what life is like there since I’ve always lived in the city.

MagnoliaBeige · 28/08/2021 18:20

What a horrible thread - “let’s laugh at people who we rely on to spend lots of their London money to prop up the local economy during the winter months”

amiadillo · 28/08/2021 18:21

Please don't tar all Londoners with the same brush. I'm a born & raised Londoner & don't know anyone who would be rude to hospitality staff.

RadioSixMusicLover · 28/08/2021 18:21

Yes, because everyone DFL is rude to service staff.
Bloody weird thread.

holidayspotlocal · 28/08/2021 18:21

@Pinkchocolate it worries me beacuse they get themselves into dangerous situations then other people have to rescue them

OP posts:
amiadillo · 28/08/2021 18:22

Logically not all of those DFLs would have even grown up in London & would come from other places.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/08/2021 18:23

Are you never a tourist OP? Do you just stay in your beach heaven 24/7? How boring.

amiadillo · 28/08/2021 18:24

t worries me beacuse they get themselves into dangerous situations then other people have to rescue them

do locals never do this?

RadioSixMusicLover · 28/08/2021 18:25
@Pinkchocolate it worries me beacuse they get themselves into dangerous situations then other people have to rescue them
Realistically how often does this happen?

Redyellowpink · 28/08/2021 18:25

I live in the south west..many people here own 4x4s...and there's always some local teenage boys jumping off a rock into the sea and having to be hospitalised with a bleeding anus.

Let's hope you never go to London and misunderstand anything or annoy people by going through a tube barrier with a paper ticket

Cosmos123 · 28/08/2021 18:26

You sound lovely OP.

Ohfortheloveofgodwhatnow · 28/08/2021 18:29

I live in a tourist spot. Yes we get DFL types, some of which are from the cities and some who are actually born and brought up here. People have arse hole potential wherever they’re from. It’s not a big city thing. For most of the locals, the tourists are a welcome cash injection into the town. It’s good for the local economy.

Rollercoaster1920 · 28/08/2021 18:35

Just watch Blue Juice!

burritofan · 28/08/2021 18:36

How about all Londoners and other city-dwellers cancel their UK holidays and don’t go to the coast? Sure the economy will be fine without tourism!

BlackeyedSusan · 28/08/2021 18:37

it is important that people need to know about tides and cliffs...

I know about tides, and cliffs... but I would still say there was a lot more beach this morning as a joke...

you get it everywherre... londoners complain about out of london visiting.. university towns students etc etc etc...
