To have said this to my friend?

I met up with my friend, and was talking to her about how DS wants to go to a football match and how expensive it is, she told me she knows as her partner takes her son to them often, she then told me that as her DS is quite small for his age, they still buy him a child's ticket (he's 16 so would need an adults) and no one questions anything.

I told her that I was surprised that they've never been questioned. She then told me that her partner tells her son to say he's 14 if anyone asks. I told her I was shocked at the encouraging him to lie and that I didn't think it was right buying the wrong tickets as it is stealing. Friend then left

Was I BU?

OP posts:

Yabu to judge

Ozberry · 28/08/2021 17:02

Yeah, you were a bit

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 28/08/2021 17:02

Ywb sanctimonious.

What did you hope to achieve by saying all that?

Flatdisco · 28/08/2021 17:02

You were in my opinion. It's not stealing. Also its from a massive football club who are very unlikely to be struggling for money. As the smaller ones tend yo be cheaper. Which vluo or level is it op?

kitkatsky · 28/08/2021 17:03

Yes. Totally unreasonable tbh.

Bluntness100 · 28/08/2021 17:03

Personally I always find it better not to judge your friends. But you do you.

mbosnz · 28/08/2021 17:03

My parents used to do this with me, and it made me so uncomfortable!

Geamhradh · 28/08/2021 17:05

No you weren't. But this is MN where everyone thinks lying about kids' ages to get freebies and reductions is fine.

Bluntness100 · 28/08/2021 17:06

@Geamhradh

I think you miss read the op? She didn’t ask if it was ok to do this. No one responded if it was ok or not. She asked if she was unreasonable to accuse her friend of theft. And people have said yes.
WorkingItOutAsIGo · 28/08/2021 17:06

Are you sure he would need adult? At our club child’s tickets go up to 21.

SheABitSpicyToday · 28/08/2021 17:07

Completely normal thing to do IMO. My daughter has been 5 for 2 years now.

NorthernDramaLlama · 28/08/2021 17:07

DC was worried she'd be too old for soft play recently (very lanky 10 year old) and told the lady she was 8! I went with the flow.
In your situation I would probably have laughed and said you're lucky to get away with it.

caughtinanet · 28/08/2021 17:09

You must be a both a new poster and rather naive Grin

Lying about child's age or trying to get them to crouch/stand up tall for height requirements is as old as the hills and is a regular thread

Some people think it's fine, some don't is the (rather obvious) summary of views Smile

TheChip · 28/08/2021 17:10

Its not stealing if theyre still paying. A seat is a seat. I would say that they are robbing people based on age.

Kite22 · 28/08/2021 17:21

YWBU judging your friend and sticking your oar in.

Queenoftheashes · 28/08/2021 17:24

Stealing? From those gangsters?

GlinnerForPM · 28/08/2021 17:26

Yes YABU and judgey. I would have left in her shoes.

GintyMcGinty · 28/08/2021 17:27

Your friend is BU

But I wouldn't have said anything.

m0therofdragons · 28/08/2021 17:28

My dad once joked at a football match that the dc (my brother and I) weren’t going to get away with a kid’s ticket so can he be an oap instead? He was then put out they said yes.

I’m quite a rule person so wouldn’t do it myself but couldn’t get annoyed about someone else doing it.

Fivefourthreetwo · 28/08/2021 17:28

MYOB

Blueskytoday06 · 28/08/2021 17:29

Yeah you are BU. What does it matter to you. Let them do them and you do you.

Blueskytoday06 · 28/08/2021 17:31

but YANBU re your thoughts on stealing, those poor footballers are on meagre wages and this doesn't help put food on their family's table.

youaresunshine · 28/08/2021 17:37

When I was 14 my mum once made me do a drawing so that I could get a blue Peter badge and get into the odd attraction for free. I really didn't want to do it (you can't say "no" to my mum!) So I signed the feckin' thing, "by Laura, aged 8." Tbf it was a shit drawing, an 8 yo would have done better.
It was actually shown on TV by Basil Brush who then proceeded to make fun of it and my spelling.
So there you have it. I now pay full price for my dc when required.

Blueemeraldagain · 28/08/2021 17:43

If it’s your local, struggling post COVID, football team then yes, I would say something. If it’s Manchester United etc then no I wouldn’t.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 28/08/2021 17:44

OP you were sanctimonious. PP Laura aged 8 that is a really funny story. Sorry Basil Brush took the piss, but he did take the piss out of a lot of things. Hope you got some free entries for your trouble. Hope your DC appreciate the fact that you are prepared to pay for them to go into attractions.
