To think shortsleeved rompers for babies are pointless and irresponsible?

Saw a tiny baby in one of those short-sleeved romper things today...can only have been a few weeks old. Firstly in their pram (which wasn't particularly in the shade, no parasol), then on parents' laps, midday sun bearing down. Why do people buy these things, for babies of this age, when they should be covering them up and can't yet wear suncream? Am I unreasonable to think they're pointless and irresponsible - and that there's not really a situation where vest and sleepsuit won't do?

@Mrsjayy

My eldest is 28 and had a touch of jaundice advice was let her lie in her pram short sleeved in the sun
I would say, that is now specifically advised against, because it has been shown to do nothing at all for jaundice.

I saw a newborn this afternoon looking VERY hot under a fluffy blanket wearing a hat! I'm also in the Yorkshire sunshine.

I suppose the point is, parents with a newborn are probable not in the absolute best frame of mind at all times...

You seem overly-invested (no pun intended).

HurryUpAndWait23 · 28/08/2021 16:42

To be fair, the issue isn't the outfit the child was wearing but the fact that they were in direct sunshine.

That's really not advised at all.

RunnerBeanz · 28/08/2021 16:42

@PurpleCurtain if it was one instance, there's no sunburn, and it means you're being more cautious from now on then it may be more of a positive than you think (at the risk of being told I'm a hypocrite!). You likely do, but make sure you also have sun shields for car windows etc - sun damage doesn't just happen outside!

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult

I based all my parenting decisions on what was happening in Yorkshire at any given time 🤣🤣
It would appear that baby clothes shops should also plan their buying and merchandising strategies on the same basis 🤣
Cuddlyrottweiler · 28/08/2021 16:47

It's not 'safe' to dress them in a vest AND sleepsuit when it's hot because they overheat which is incredibly dangerous. So get off your high horse.

😂😂 Love it!

My DS is a summer baby and lived in these in his first few months. He seems to be fine..

loveinthe90s · 28/08/2021 16:48

Such a dramatic overreaction from the OP. Why are you so over-invested in this and so terrified of the sun?

Do you honestly believe that an item like this should carry a HEALTH warning?!

turnthebiglightoff · 28/08/2021 16:49

My 2.5 year old was a summer baby and lived in short sleeved rompers. He's fine. He also (despite lots of sunscreen) goes brown in the sun - is olive skinned like his dad. I'm sorry I didn't meet your exacting standards, OP. Maybe try minding your own business in future?

Also, you can buy suncream that is safe for younger babies. Some from 3 months, some from newborn even.

Driftingblue · 28/08/2021 16:54

I often joke that I am a vampire I burn so easily so I take sun safety very seriously for my child.

I loved short sleeve rompers for my newborn. It was so hot. We would go out on the garden, I would spread a blanket on the ground, and we would lie there in the shade of our large tree watching the leaves dance.

When we went for walks in the pram I always had a light muslin to use in addition to the canopy in case we needed extra shade and I certainly never stayed on the sun for long because like I mentioned, I’m a vampire. We would just be walking to the next shady spot.

I live in Asia where it's 35+ most of the summer and still people will put their babies in double layers. In the spring, when it's about 25 degrees, they'll still be in pram suits.

I get yelled at by old ladies in the street for having DD2 (4 months) in just a vest or romper!

We don't really use prams here so she's always in a sling and I use a parasol. I've also used sunscreen on her occasionally from 2 months - even a few minutes in the sun here can be dangerous and I figure it's the lesser evil.

I guess my point is, there are many ways to skin a cat and the baby will in all likelihood be fine.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 28/08/2021 16:55

i guess I was thinking that a warning on products like this for babies that they should still be kept out of the sun would be very helpful

Why stop there? Let's put a warning on sleepsuits "Not suitable if you plan to expose your baby on a mountain, like a Spartan'. Or nappies 'May not contain poo effectively, especially if you're out somewhere and have forgotten the changing bag'. Vests 'Will not protect baby against prolonged immersion in the sea'

After all, we can't be too careful.

miltonj · 28/08/2021 16:58

Of course rompers are safe!

Many normal people put sun cream on their babies regardless of age. So don't assume they didn't have it on. You're right though, a very young baby should not be in direct sunlight for very long. But short periods with appropriate cover up is fine.

I'm in Yorkshire today too, and I would say it has definitely been too hot for a sleep suit. My baby has been red and sweaty today in a vest and loose leggings.

Would you like a warning on woolly jumpers saying that they should only be worn when it's cold outside due to the risk of babies overheating?

3WildOnes · 28/08/2021 17:09

I never kept my babies completely out of the sun and they wore rompers or just a vest in the heat. I didn’t leave them in direct sun all day but a few minutes here and there I didn’t worry about. None of them have ever got a sunburn either.

PurpleCurtain · 28/08/2021 17:10

Also in yorkshire and now feel doubly useless as I had baby's ankles exposed today AND had him in long sleeves!

My midwife said wearing suncream was an absolute no, but I'm not sure if that was mostly to get the message home that they shouldn't be in the sun to start with?

MeredithGreyishblue · 28/08/2021 17:15

It's posts like this that made me an over anxious mess with my first, thinking every little decision could kill him. Parasols, sun shades, changing the direction I walked in... miserable.

OP, in the kindest way, keep this to yourself.

Sun cream is advised against for newborns and up to 6 months because their skin is so sensitive. It's why only very simple oils and things are recommended too and not scented moisturiser type things. Most suncream is full of dubious ingredients, but for older children the benefits of not getting sunburnt obviously outweigh that. For babies it's easier to keep them in the shade and avoid sun cream.
Keeva2017 · 28/08/2021 17:22

Oh do get over yourself. They are absolutely fine. You’ve just got a bee in your bonnet and your projecting on other people. Bore off. Love a short sleeve romper in summer.

HestersSamplerofCarrots · 28/08/2021 17:24
