To think it’s strange my dad thinks 26 is late 20’s

Older ds turned 26 this week and df said to him. You’re up in your late 20’s. Not sure if it’s an age thing.

To me, x1-3 is early, x4-6 is mid and x7-9 is late. But 26 is definitely late rather than early, if you take either side of 25 as the mid point. And it doesn't really matter anyway.

OP I think you are hanging your post on the wrong issue. If your father is a nasty critical person would it make a difference if he described the age in a different way?

You missed 20! Is that not part of your 20s?

Mathematically, my view of 20 - 24 is early twenties. 25 to 29 is late twenties. You might not like young, middle aged and old, OP as you might have a middle aged DC (0-25 young, 26-50 middle aged, 50+old).

We call it late-mid

For each set of three years you've got 'early-early' (21), 'mid-early' (22) and 'late-early' (23) then early-mid, mid-mid etc

We started saying it as a joke but it works quite nicely 😂

I think maybe your sensitive to your sons progress and the context your father was discussing. Really whether it’s mid or late twenties is not the hill to die on. The issue is what was said, the impact of it, if it’s valid and if your son needs support.

In my mind it goes

20-23 = early twenties
24-26 = mid twenties
27-29 = late twenties

If you want to be pedantic, 26 is late mid twenties 😆

Different people are bugged/bothered by different things, and no-one has the right to minimise how they feel about it...

I think it’s deeper than semantics, as in if he’s late twenties the father has a valid point, but mid twenties and he doesn’t, th son is still young enough to be excused.

26 is nowhere near the beginning of middle age 🙄
Nor is 50 classified as "old".

Exactly what i would think. Someone saying its late 20s wouldn't bother me, though at 56, telling me i am late 50s might!

I'd say 26 is mid 20's
21,22,23 early 20's
24,25,26 mid 20's
27,28,29 late 20's
26 is 4 years off 30

I think there's overlap.

20 thru 24 is early 20s

23 thru 27 is mid 20s

26 thru 29 (and occasionally the first half of 30 ) is late 20s

Early/mid/late - these kinds of phrases are supposed to be a bit fudgable.
