We are due to go away on Monday to a holiday cottage the owner contacted us and advised that we now can't go as the family before is have tested positive. Apparently he has proved it to her and they've said they can't travel due to distance they would need to take a break going home. We are visiting friends who have a new baby in a small house. So can't stay there we can't afford to forward the cash for anywhere else and it's difficult at short notice.
AIBU to feel annoyed. I know there s nothing I can do but it's our first family holiday in two years.

Yeah natural to feel annoyed, but ultimately nobody has done anything wrong. The family staying there have to stay on.

Ifyouarehappyandyouknowit21 · 28/08/2021 07:19

Its frustrating but its a risk we take sadly when we book holidays.

Xmasfairy86 · 28/08/2021 07:19

Oh that proper sucks!

Do you get a refund?

LemonTT · 28/08/2021 07:22

I think you should put best efforts into finding alternative accommodation. What’s your budget and the location you need to stay in? Are there any special needs that will apply.

Use social media to find something constructive.

LumpyandBumps · 28/08/2021 08:08

That’s such a shame, and of course it’s natural to feel disappointed.

If what the owner says is true then it is a situation that no one can help.

Assuming the current occupant isn’t Dominic Cummings most people would need to stop for a break en route to home.

Wineat5isfine · 28/08/2021 08:24

Anyone booking a holiday at the moment is running the risk of something like this happening. It is disappointing of course, but not totally unexpected surely?

Ellmau · 28/08/2021 08:27

Sorry, OP. My holiday has been disrupted too - the hotel we were staying at has had to close due to a number staff testing positive, and although we could afford a replacement, the entire area is fully booked.

You should get a refund.

whatswithtodaytoday · 28/08/2021 08:30

That sucks. The family are being sensible though, and it must be costing them a bomb! Presumably you'll get a refund.

Try local Facebook marketplace for last minute accommodation - my friend just got a place like that, as the people had to cancel due to having Covid before going away.

bumblenbean · 28/08/2021 08:31

I’m surprised actually that they’ve been able to stay on (although I guess it’s good to avoid them spreading it around!). We’ve stayed in a couple of air bnbs this year and their T&Cs said they couldn’t accommodate an isolation period and that if you tested positive you’d have to go straight home …

Sorry you’re missing your holiday OP, take it you’re getting a full refund?

helpfulperson · 28/08/2021 08:36

The guidance allows for travelling straight home. Even with a necessary break. In their case assuming they are driving I'd be looking for a route where they can find a quiet place to stop where legs can be stretched and bushes peed behind.

LakieLady · 28/08/2021 08:36

Given the number of stories going around about people's bookings being cancelled because the owner was able rebook at a much higher rate, I'd be cynical about this, tbh.

HappyDays40 · 28/08/2021 08:36

Oh yes we will get a refund and I know there is nothing that we can do its just frustrating. What a way to end their holiday. I will try tobfind aome thing else but my husbands mum was coming wih us and she has mobility problems so we needed a flat surface. Just sad but it is what it is. I guess the cottage owner has no alternative but to let them stay. It also eats into the week after.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 28/08/2021 08:39

Its frustrating but not the end of the world. There’s going to be continued disruptions for some time and anything booked won’t automatically happen like in the past.
You could look for something else, there may be last minute cancellations from people who can’t travel as ill etc. Or use the refund and have a staycation with lots of nice days out etc.

Loubiemoo · 28/08/2021 08:41

@HappyDays40 name change fail Wink

I agree.

Also, I know a couple of households where a second adult was covid positive just as the first adult was ending their isolation, so 20 days in total with a positive case in the house.

There’s obviously no way they’re supposed to stay where they are if positive as depending on how many people are there it could be several weeks.
