Aibu? This sixth form shouldn't have a uniform.

I'm rewatching all of Waterloo Road on iPlayer. It astounds me that, despite lax rules about ties, skirts and hoodies, the sixth form still have to wear the same uniform to as the rest of the kids.

IWRBU (is Waterloo Road being unreasonable) in making these 16-18yos wear uniform? Do you know of any sixth forms which make the kids wear uniform? I don't mean top man smart suits and a tie, I mean proper school uniform.

Yes -Ackley Bridge college also wears uniform in 6th form 😁

KindergartenKop · 27/08/2021 21:11

@EverythingsComingUpRoses Ackley bridge was always a rip off Waterloo Road Grin

It's normal where I am for 16 to 18 year olds to wear school uniform. All the schools I know here have this rule.

CMZ2018 · 27/08/2021 21:13

Yes loads

Sally872 · 27/08/2021 21:14

Here (central Scotland) 16-18 year old wear uniforms. Sometimes a different tie or trim on their blazer but still much the same uniform. Don't think it is unreasonable.

kowari · 27/08/2021 21:14

I don't like uniform anyway, but I don't see a difference to be honest. Much less fuss to keep wearing a uniform where the rules are fairly relaxed than following the dress code rules for many sixth forms. It's silly because they can then go on to uni where they can wear jeans and a hoodie and still manage to learn.

Marmite27 · 27/08/2021 21:15

None of the 6th forms I know of wear uniform, even the ones attached to high schools are casual dress.

It always wound me up about the inbetweeners too Blush

UncomfortableSilence · 27/08/2021 21:16

All the 6th forms that are part of a school in my borough have a school uniform, they are different to the main school uniform though. Only the 6th form college doesn't.

Don't see a problem with it, DD starts Y12 next week and she's more than happy with the uniform.

Standrewsschool · 27/08/2021 21:18

The schools near where I live don’t have a formal uniform, but boys wear suits and girls wear office wear.

When I was at school, we had to wear anything blue (not jeans).

KindergartenKop · 27/08/2021 21:19

@Thecurtainsofdestiny whereabouts are you? I didn't realise the Scottish sixth formers had uniforms. I'm in England and honestly couldn't name one school which has one. My school let them wear different skirts but then it was phased out to smart work wear in the late 90s. I don't actually have a problem with it though, it's just not common round here.

Genuinely though, I don't know a single state school where the 6th formers wear uniform or even business dress

There are rules about not wearing offensive slogans or jeans that are more hole than trouser but they generally all show up in jeans or leggings and hoodies

Theworldisfullofgs · 27/08/2021 21:26

Yep. My DS's school does

Bratnews · 27/08/2021 21:28

KindergartenKop Scotland doesn’t have the same concept of 6th form as England. S5/S6 is a continuation of school - I don’t know any Scottish school that doesn’t expect it’s S6 students to wear uniform. Though there is probably a few!

I find the 6th forms that expect ‘office’ wear bizarre - so many offices are now more casual than 6th form students.

WiggIyWoo · 27/08/2021 21:29

Was going to say nearly every Scottish school but see I've been beaten to it. The concept of sixth form isn't a thing there though - all schools are S1-S6 and you wouldn't change schools for S5/6 in the same way you might for A Level in England. But presumably this programme is set in England!

mynameisnotkate · 27/08/2021 21:30

In Scotland we don’t really have the notion of sixth form being different to the rest of school. You just do S1-S6 without much differentiation, and there aren’t sixth form colleges. I don’t know any schools where there’s a uniform difference, except maybe a different tie in S6.

mynameisnotkate · 27/08/2021 21:31

Oh, cross posts!

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 27/08/2021 21:31

Yes I'm in Scotland

TabithaTiger · 27/08/2021 21:33

I find it very odd to see people who are pretty much adults wearing school uniform. We live an area where there are no sixth forms in schools, just colleges, so I find the whole idea of going to school at 18 pretty strange too.

lurker101 · 27/08/2021 21:35

In NI (where I went to school) sixth formers wear uniform, slightly different to junior school, I.e. different colour jumper for girls and the option to wear a jumper for boys, but still a uniform.
I actually think it’s a good idea - can easily tell who is a (often adult) pupil - and who isn’t.

thevassal · 27/08/2021 21:38

Live in Wales. All the sixth forms attached to schools in my county have compulsory uniform, usually slightly different to the main school (different colour jumper or tie or whatever). I'm not a huge fan tbh but it's better than the weird "office wear" private schools seem to want sixth formers to wear - like others say it usually is way more formal than any office I've ever worked in and just looks wrong on 16 year olds!

loobylou44 · 27/08/2021 21:39

I'm in the NE of England and the 6th form attached to my youngest school has a uniform. My eldest is due to start a different 6th form in a couple of weeks and it is business dress.

I can't think of any local 6th forms that are casual dress.

Sorry for the multiple posts, my phone had a complete fit.

Miniroofbox · 27/08/2021 21:40

My kids school did. Different jumper. And different blazer/tie/badges if you were prefect or had honours.
