To ask for burn remedies

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 27/08/2021 18:49

As I'm extremely clumsy I've managed to burn two fingers while making tea. I ran them under cool water immediately but they still hurt almost an hour later. Is there anything I can do? Or do I just have to suck up the pain for now until they stop hurting.

I read that as “bum remedies”. I’ll be honest, I’m disappointed.

Lockheart · 27/08/2021 18:52

Hi OP, the NHS has lots of guidance on this.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/burns-and-scalds/

Take some painkillers and I'd probably run them under cold water a bit longer.

Lots of posters on here will tell you to do silly things like put aftershave or toothpaste on it. Please don't. It can trap heat in, cause infection, or give you a chemical burn.

Keep the wound clean and pat dry gently with a towel.

leonpride · 27/08/2021 18:55

For something like that I'd say just leave it really, ice if that'd help but it'll most likely just draw attention to it more

Presumably you jerked away from the kettle as a reflex so there's no real damage to the skin. It will sting a bit, but you'll be alright

I had a burn from the other that left a horrible peeling burn. I just left it and ignored the stinging. Healed fine.

Do NOT put ice on a burn. It will cause more damage.

Please ignore the above.

Cold water, lockheart summed up the no whacky remedies better than I could.

Chamomileteaplease · 27/08/2021 19:04

Take the painkillers. Really helps.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 27/08/2021 19:06

I'm already on pain killers so that's covered I'll run it under water again and hope it works, I definitely won't put ice on it

Keep them under the cold water tap until it blisters and then you can pop it with a heated needle & disinfect

Me too...

When I did the same with hair straighteners I kept my hand in a bowl of cold water for hours as every time I took it out it would burn. I kept changing the water for colder water. That helped.

BanditOne · 27/08/2021 19:10

I find Sudocrem is good for burns if you have any .

GlassQueen · 27/08/2021 19:10

Try the flesh from the middle of a cucumber. Old chef’s tip!

Flowerysocks · 27/08/2021 19:18

Lavender oil works well for me.

Lockheart · 27/08/2021 19:21

No, oils should not be used for burns. Only cold water and, if infected, an antiseptic cream.

This risks infection and will only serve to trap the heat in. Water only.
Greenandcabbagelooking · 27/08/2021 19:22

Cold water and painkillers. Please don't put anything else on a burn. If the burn encircles a finger, or is bigger than the palm of your hand, you need medical attention. Don't pop any blisters either.

MrsPnut · 27/08/2021 19:27

No oil, no sudocrem. Cool water for much longer than you ever think and if they are blistering then seek medical help.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 27/08/2021 20:01

It needs to be under cold running water for 20 minutes immediately.

GlassQueen · 27/08/2021 20:07

There is only an infection risk if the skin is broken.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 27/08/2021 20:10

I've had them in cool running water. Pain seems to be subsiding now. I was sat on my stool by the sink with my hand in the water.

Do not pop the blisters. They heal better under the protection of the blister.

Ignore any mad Mumsnet advice about oils, creams, ice, Sudocrem or anything else and just follow the NHS advice.

Mumsnet burns advice should come with a warning.

Mydogisagentleman · 27/08/2021 20:11

Anti inflammatory. I was given them when I got sunburn so possibly not appropriate

leonpride · 27/08/2021 20:11

Should've clarified. Not an actual burn presumably, but even so, I meant if it's still a bit stingy after a few days when it's kinda healed over.

I doubt it's an open wound in OPs case, more just pain from where the burn/scald was. In which case it's not a big deal

Triceratopsmama · 27/08/2021 20:11

Potato peelings. I burnt myself really badly at the weekend. I put some potato peel on it, wrapped in clingfilm to hold it on and the pain was gone in minutes. I kept it on for 2 days(changing it regularly) I did it on Sunday and it has completely healed already.
