If an employer didn’t pay you in error is it unreasonable to request same day payment?

Dh started a new job a few months a go, last month he didn’t get paid as he had to do a month in hand which has been totally rubbish during summer holidays. Normal pay date is 28th but was told by the manager he would be paid today 27th because 28th is a Saturday, dh hasn’t been paid. I’m not sure if they have forgotten to pay him or if it will be 4 days late because of the weekend and bank holiday? He hasn’t been given a payslip so can’t even look on that for information, normally I would email them from dh as he works nights so is asleep but the company is closed today to give everyone a 4 day weekend so can’t check until Tuesday. I am hoping it is just late due to the bank holiday or something like that and not that they have forgotten to pay him otherwise it will be another week with no income as it takes 4 working days to hit your account which will make it Monday 6th September. If they have forgotten to pay him would we be cheeky to request a bank transfer or fast chaps payment as a one off?

Before I get accused of begging I am not, we have a decent income so have been using savings etc and have a credit card if needed. I just don’t want to have to pay the mortgage and the rest of the direct debits out of the savings again on the 1st if it can be avoided.

I think it would be ok to ask op whether that is something they can do

Mermaidpool · 27/08/2021 11:46

I think it would be fine to ask, you are only asking for what he is owed

Shirleyphallus · 27/08/2021 11:47

Payment could hit the account any time today, it doesn’t always go in first thing

But YABU to email your husband’s work on his behalf about his pay!! He needs to sort this himself, unless he is a toddler

Wilmaa · 27/08/2021 11:47

Totally fine to question it.
You were expecting it today so it should be there.

MsVestibule · 27/08/2021 11:48

Definitely not unreasonable to ask for a same day payment! I'd email anyway - if it's a small business, the owner/manager might be keeping an eye on the emails.

ElizaDoolots · 27/08/2021 11:49

It’s not unreasonable to ask, but it may not be possible. Please don’t email his work on his behalf though, that’s really embarrassing and will make him look like a complete child.

5zeds · 27/08/2021 11:49

Surely mortgage will be effected by bank holiday too.

Check with your bank that it isn’t payment and ending ours are rarely there first thing so it may be on its way,

JacketSpud55 · 27/08/2021 11:51

@Shirleyphallus when I said email on his behalf, I meant an email I would write with dh consent and sign off with his name, not mine.

He can certainly ask, whether or not they will agree to do it is a different matter. My colleague once got the wrong amount of tax taken, basically 90% of his pay was missing. The company refused to do anything and said it was impossible to correct until the following payday (yeah, "impossible").

Generally the bigger the company is, the less likely they are to have any sympathy (or at least be willing to help). If the payroll is done by Doris in accounts and she's screwed it up, she can fix it. If it's outsourced (as in my colleague's case) and you're one of hundreds of thousands of employees, there will be a number of mistakes made every month and because it's so impersonal they really don't care.

girlmom21 · 27/08/2021 11:53

Wake him up and tell him to call payroll.
If he doesn't get paid today and he should be you may need to wait another month dependant on company policy.

Lougle · 27/08/2021 11:56

I once didn't get paid because I took sick leave and my employer (NHS) forgot that I had continuous service. They initially said next payroll, then when I refused that offered a payment that would take a week to land, which I refused. In the end I told them I'd be at the finance office at 4pm and I'd expect the payment from petty cash. I got it.

JacketSpud55 · 27/08/2021 11:56

No or direct debits will go out as normal on the 1st September the Monday bank holiday won’t change that. If he gets paid Tuesday 31st August that’s great no issues with the direct debits but if they haven’t added him to payroll then it’s possibly going to be Monday 6th September at the earliest.

Wake him up and tell him to call payroll.

OP has stated they're all off today.

Any payroll dept can process a same day transaction if they want to. If they can't, then strictly speaking they're in breach of contract and you can ask for any expenses incurred as a result (late payments etc).

Buyitinbamboo · 27/08/2021 11:58

If its a small business, I would get your DH to check but wouldn't worry too much. I do payroll for many and do same day payments for them all and it's by close of business that day (in the staff's contracts) so it's not unusual for me to do it at 2pm.

Larger places are a bit of a nightmare.

iamthesandstorm · 27/08/2021 11:59

I would chase. ..If they have made an error it is possible to rectify it..If they want to. my last pay there was a problem with sending back and payment didn't show till later in the day.

MauveMavis · 27/08/2021 11:59

When this happened to me I threaten to down tools and go and sit in the the finance dept until they sorted it.

Nhs - happens to junior doctors all the time which is disgraceful.

JacketSpud55 · 27/08/2021 11:59

@girlmom21 another month?? The whole company is off for 4 days to allow people to spend time with their children before they return to work. Which is lovely but in this situation not very helpful they are closed on a working day.

Sorry I missed the bit about the company being closed today.

Yeah there's a potential for him having to wait. It completely depends on the company.

bollocks to this!
Rayna37 · 27/08/2021 12:03

It's the 27th today though, depending on the size of the company and how they do their payroll it may still be paid today.

EyebeIbewe · 27/08/2021 12:04

There was an error with my pay last year - I requested a same-day bank transfer of the correct amount, they then went and did the calculations via the PAYE system for the next month (I think they had to notify HRMC they had done things this way too). I was given exactly what i would have been after tax and NI - it was the third month of fuck ups from them though so I hit the roof.

outdooryone · 27/08/2021 12:06

Get your DH to call boss and payroll now. Followed up by email.

I would be careful to enquire if there was an issue or delay first, but reserve the opportunity to be quite clear about what is expected - my pay as soon as they can manage it, and no next month is not acceptable, today or Tuesday is.

JacketSpud55 · 27/08/2021 12:08

Good to hear there is a possibility it could still be paid today, we must have been lucky previously with these things as it’s always gone in early hours of the morning.

OP posts:
EyebeIbewe · 27/08/2021 12:09

They can do payroll tomorrow even - via immediate transfer.
