Shamelessly posting here for traffic.

I am constantly tired. I’m 34 but feel so much older. I have to nap at least once a day otherwise I’m a wreck. I downloaded a sleep tracking app last night and these are the results after the first night. Can anyone tell me what this all means? I’m guessing the bits with the red exclamation marks are bad? I have an appointment to see my GP in a few weeks but I’d really like to try and understand what’s happening before I see her. Is it normal to wake up so much and to snore for so long? I don’t ever remember waking up and I never get up to use the loo.

Thank you!

You were only in bed for 6 and a half hours. You need to go to sleep earlier or stay in bed later. You are not going to feel refreshed unless you get a proper night's sleep. I wouldn't take the snoring and waking bits as gospel on those kind of devices.

Fireplace12 · 26/08/2021 22:36

Snoring always impacts negatively upon sleep. Everyone wakes up lots during the night. You got a reasonable amount of deep sleep. There’s nothing alarming there.

DiplodocusRex · 26/08/2021 22:36

@Hellocatshome I wish I could. My son is ASD and has severe ADHD. I go to bed when he does. He is under the care of a psychiatrist at CAMHS and takes melatonin but it’s been an ongoing battle for a very long time.

As for the snoring, the app actually recorded it. All of it. I was mortified!

Six and a half hours is fairly normal isn't it?

Hellocatshome · 26/08/2021 22:39

@DiplodocusRex ah well that obviously makes it more difficult.

DiplodocusRex · 26/08/2021 22:39

@Fireplace12 Thank you for that! I broke my nose a few years ago, that must be why I’m doing it.

OP posts:
DiplodocusRex · 26/08/2021 22:41

@CaffeineAndNicotine I think it is fairly normal. I was just curious about the quality of the sleep.

OP posts:
Hellocatshome · 26/08/2021 22:43

Between 6 and 9 is normal but if you are still tired when sleeping for 6 and a half then that would suggest more is needed. The quality of sleep doesn't look too bad, most people have peaks and troughs of deep/light sleep like that. Maybe try to alter your sleeping position tonight to see if it makes you snore less.

Looks like sleep apnea?
Copied text from internet below:

Symptoms of sleep apnoea mainly happen while you sleep.
They include:
breathing stopping and starting
making gasping, snorting or choking noises
waking up a lot
loud snoring
During the day, you may also:
feel very tired
find it hard to concentrate
have mood swings
have a headache when you wake up
It can be hard to tell if you have sleep apnoea. It may help to ask someone to stay with you while you sleep so they can check for the symptoms.

lljkk · 26/08/2021 22:49

23% deep sleep is good, relatively high.
People will tell you that these trackers are very inaccurate, though. I don't know if that's fair criticism or not.

My FitBit app say that for my age, mid 50s, typically 8-16% of our sleep is deep.

Statistics on sleep of average Fitbit users.

@Hellocatshome thank you! I will do that. I think I definitely need more because the tiredness is quite debilitating. Something isn’t quite right.

@GNCQ I did wonder if it could be sleep apnoea. I have all of those symptoms during the day. My DH goes to bed much earlier than me and is a very heavy sleeper but I’ll have to ask him to listen to me while I sleep this weekend.

DiplodocusRex · 26/08/2021 22:53

@lljkk that’s really interesting! Does it say how often people usually wake up during the night? I’m wondering why my wake-ups are highlighted in red.

OP posts:
Elouera · 26/08/2021 22:54

Have you had general bloods done too? Checks for anaemia, thyroid etc? These can cause fatigue also.

lljkk · 26/08/2021 22:54

I dunno why red -- maybe they think people want to be alarmed by the 'awake' time.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 26/08/2021 22:54

Have you tried the nose strips for snoring, they're just like little plasters with a slight rigidity so they hold your nostrils open a little. I get them for when I have a cold or hay fever,as they make it a lot easier to sleep with a bunged up nose 😁

TakeYourFinalPosition · 26/08/2021 22:55

I’ve never known a sleep tracking app not suggest sleep apnea, to be fair, they are notoriously rubbish for pinpointing when you’re “awake”, and it seems unlikely that you’d have woken up that many times with no idea that you had.

I’d second that six and a half hours might not be enough for you, and it sounds like you’ve got quite a tiring home situation. I’d be half dead on that little sleep.

I used to use my Apple Watch for sleep tracking, it always seemed reliable, but I did an actual sleep test for four nights and the data couldn’t have been more difficult, so now I charge my watch at night and ignore the sleep tracking function!

Elieza · 26/08/2021 23:00

Are you the one who always has to stay up with dc rather than dh taking a turn?

Perhaps you could do alternate nights to give you a chance of sleeping more?

Try the nose strips. They say also if you’re overweight it can make you snore so that may be relevant too?

lljkk · 26/08/2021 23:07

My FitBit doesn't suggest I have sleep apnea, or even high estimated oxygen variation, or that it can say if I have sleep apnea.

DiplodocusRex · 26/08/2021 23:11

@Elouera I have an appointment soon. I’ve been bruising really easily lately so it might be something more than sleep issues.

@HalfShrunkMoreToGo I just bought some today! I’m going to try them tonight 😬

@TakeYourFinalPosition thanks for your input. I was quite surprised to see how many times I had woken up! It doesn’t seem right at all.

@Elieza Yes, it’s always me. I do it gladly though 😊 My DH works 12 hour days 6 days a week. He is just as tired as I am. It’s so tough! I homeschool my DS so it makes sense that I do the late shifts. We have a one year old and I nap when she naps, my DS gets his screen time and I get to try and catch up on some sleep. I bought some nose strips today.

Have you checked your iron levels?

DiplodocusRex · 26/08/2021 23:18

@lljkk the app I used doesn’t say anything about sleep apnoea either. It does have an option to record farting though 😂 I was quite relieved to see I didn’t fart at all in my sleep.

OP posts:
Phoxinusphoxinus · 27/08/2021 09:19

I would get your iron levels checked. My ferritin was 25 and that can cause symptom of deficiency. My doctor wasn't concerned about the level but taking supplements has made a difference and I have since found out that different areas have different ranges. If my bloods had been done in another part of the country I would have been prescribed iron.

Twitchynose · 27/08/2021 17:22

Google sleep architecture to look at what a “normal” sleep pattern looks like. We naturally move through 4 stages of sleep every 60-90 mins. We often wake up at the lightest part of our sleep, but it’s only for few seconds or so so we don’t recall it. The evidence base as to the accuracy of sleep monitoring apps is pretty poor. Many are just based on movement. Don’t get worked up about your sleep - that’s guaranteed to make it worse!
