To think Norwich is overrated?

I hope I don't cause offence to anyone with this post. However, I visited Norwich for the first time today after people telling me it was lovely and worth the visit. I expected it to be similar to York...but..it just wasn't. It seemed quite rundown and dirty, difficult to navigate, and literally the only nice bit was near the cathedral. However, even that was still not anywhere near as nice as somewhere like York...

I spent 6 hours there exploring. Am I missing something or is Norwich hugely overrated?

Why would go somewhere for pubs? Or coffee shops. As if that is a redeeming quality for a dull place.

Decent pubs and coffee shops can be had in most cities but I don't want to travel there just for that.

CarrieBlue · 26/08/2021 22:53

York is horrible, dirty, expensive, overcrowded with tourists and students and now southerners driving up house prices who think they’re moving to Harrogate in their expectations of the city. Norwich is lovely. I live in York.

ShowOfHands · 26/08/2021 22:53

I suspect you missed the best bits. It has charm, quirkiness, is steeped in history, wonderful art, good food and drink, a great market, architecture. I lived there for 6 years, did my masters there and live fairly locally. It's beautiful.

Citylady88 · 26/08/2021 22:54

The newly developed riverside area is one of the worst bits - chain restaurants and a big Wetherspoons, so I can't really imagine what made u go there? The market is lively and full of locals plus some tourists enjoying great local food surrounded by some really interesting medieval and modern buildings , lots of great coffee shops and independents on the lanes, excellent riverside walks, beautiful buildings that make up campus of the Norwich uni of the arts. It's not absolutely full of tourists tho and is very much a living city,

You wouldn’t expect lovely pubs:restaurants: coffee shops: bars to be a part of any reason you visit somewhere.

Do you take a ham and cheese sandwich with you when you go somewhere

Are you that person who sits in a lay-by with a thermos and camping chairs?????

DoYouLikeOwls · 26/08/2021 22:57

Radio Norwich is great

SmidgenofaPigeon · 26/08/2021 22:58

@ActonSquirrel but who wants to spend a day/weekend somewhere with shit food and coffee shops and pubs Confused

Of course it’s part of the reason to visit somewhere!

lljkk · 26/08/2021 22:58

I find the Riverside area transformation fascinating. Especially if you canoe up & down the river. Those flats are going for very high prices. Right next to the old run down warehouses and river furniture. In contrast, the Sainsbury's Centre bores me*, the N&N is a more interesting building to me.

*Except in the Avengers film, of course, or whatever SuperHero film that was. Then the SCVA is interesting after all.

Certainly not but a dull place with lovely pubs is not somewhere I'd go either.

If I want to visit a lovely pub or restaurant there are a multitude in my own city London.

If there is very little to do somewhere why would you go just because it had good pubs. Can do that anywhere Confused

ActonSquirrel · 26/08/2021 23:00

I mean in saying Norwich has very little to do people are saying it has great pubs. Why would would go there for a pub as if that makes up for a boring place.

Yes, your missing a trick.

It has a wonderful vibe, great history, lovely people and some bloody great restaurants as well as a great shopping centre and a great market as well as loads of activities/interests .

Wasn't keen the first time but it has grown on us immensely to the point that we're considering moving there or thereabouts.

CointreauVersial · 26/08/2021 23:00

Haha, what a great thread. OP says "Norwich is awful", and every single poster comes back and says "no it's not, it's fab".

I don't know it very well, only been a few times to drop/collect DD1 who is at UEA, but I think it's a gem. You've been outvoted, OP. Grin

Hmm

The fat cat - beer pub of the year. The whole of the U.K..

Pedalpushers · 26/08/2021 23:03

Who said it was like York? I've never heard the two compared.

York is pretty but incredibly dull. Most boring place I've ever visited.

I lived in Norwich and it was bloody brilliant, such an underrated gem. If you're not into pubs or walks though, it's not got huge amounts to do. There are two walking tours of the city that you can download online, I forget where but I think it's just the Norwich website, they show you all the sights.

Me too.

Carboncheque · 26/08/2021 23:07

Did you go to the mustard museum? I’m assuming there is one.

TheFairyCaravan · 26/08/2021 23:08

Norwich is beautiful. We’d never been until I took DS2 for a interview at UEA. He went there for his degree, fell in love with the city, met his girlfriend and never came home. They’ve bought a house in a village on the outskirts so we visit a fair bit. I love it because it’s so quirky.

16purplecolour16 · 26/08/2021 23:08

Norwich is bloody great. It is a working city and has its gritty parts but has a European vibe to it.

I don't really like pubs. Or beer.

Hence if Norwich has not got an awful lot to do other than good pubs why go there.

It isn't a redeeming feature of a boring place to have pubs and nice walks ffs

SmidgenofaPigeon · 26/08/2021 23:12

There’s been LOADS of other stuff mentioned that’s not a pub or a walk.

Excelthetube · 26/08/2021 23:14

@ActonSquirrel
What got your goat. Why even come on this thread.
Either you’ve been to Norwich and hated it, which is fine

But to randomly comment is weird

FYI ACTON IS A SHITHOLE - not a decent thing to do. You have to get on a tube to see anything nice of any description.

From someone who lives in Chiswick - nice walks and pubs Grin
