Hearing noises from an empty house.

My friend lives next door to an empty house. Her and the neighbours the other side have heard noises like banging on the wall, someone running up the stairs and plugs being pushed into the socket. She was talking to a woman who was looking at the house from the outside and told her what she'd heard and the woman said "I won't be going in there then". Is she being unreasonable?

It's squatters or mice/rats. Ghosts don't exist. Sorry.

coffeepleeease · 26/08/2021 21:53

I'm really confused but not intrigued ...

Blindleadingtheblind · 26/08/2021 21:53

Sorry to hear about your brother OP. Are you able to inspect the house?

coffeepleeease · 26/08/2021 21:53

*now!!!

@Bluntness100

Op why did you start off by saying your friend lives next to a supposed empty house where someone is clearly living there, but then indicate irs your late brothers house?
I was trying not to give too many details. The woman next door is a friend of the family and has been for many years. The house has been empty since we asked her to check on New Years Day as he hadn't answered his phone and we were concerned. His body was taken away and the house has been empty since. That's why she commented on the noises coming from there.

@tillytoodles1

I mean is neighbour/friend being unreasonable telling people what she's heard, or should she keep quiet and just let somebody move in .
She’s not being unreasonable but it seems a bit counter-productive, unless she’d prefer to live next to an empty house.
Freddiefox · 26/08/2021 21:57

Sorry to hear this op, yes she’s unreasonable, have you had the house checked to make sure it’s
Clear?

Bluntness100 · 26/08/2021 21:57

I’m sorry about your brother op.

I’m sure you know that if there is noises rhen someone or something is living there, either animals or squatters right. Someone needs to go in and check it’s been eight months And you’re being told someone or something is living there now.

Irs really better not to pretend it’s supernatural and accept it’s likely squatters, animals or someone’s imagination. But go and check.

tillytoodles1 · 26/08/2021 22:01

His wife, who he was separated from but not divorced has changed the locks, emptied it out and put it up for sale, that's why the woman was looking at it from the outside to begin with. She was thinking of buying it .

I’m really confused. Are you asking if the woman next door was unreasonable for sabotaging a potential sale? Or if she’s unreasonable for suggesting there’s squatters? Surely a proper neighbour is better than squatters?! How are you involved in the sale? Are you close to your SIL?

I still can’t make head nor tail of this.

I’m sorry about your brother.

Hopdathelf · 27/08/2021 07:19

This is why trying to be coy about details never works. The OP just confuses everyone and ends up having to reveal more than they ever intended. So much easier just to say what actually happened.

So it's not your house? You're not the one trying to sell it?

OP - I think you need to step away from the internet and have a herbal tea. I'm sorry about your brother, but someone commenting about a house you aren't trying to sell isn't unreasonable and also isn't really anything to do with you. This isn't ghosts or anything like that, it's most likely mice and your SIL will need to address it (as it will be obvious to any viewers if there are mice in an empty house).

GoWalkabout · 27/08/2021 07:37

Sorry for your loss Flowers. Yes its a bit awkward that she mentioned it. But I am surprised she prefers it empty - perhaps she is worried someone will rent it out again and she won't know who to. Perhaps she hears the noises because she is a bit traumatised by the experience of finding your brother.

DeadButDelicious · 27/08/2021 08:00

Firstly, I am so sorry about your brother.

Secondly, I would put thoughts of anything paranormal out of your mind, there is no such thing as ghosts. The neighbour is more than likely hearing mice or normal 'house' noises that are amplified and noticeable as it's currently empty. There could have been people in there doing work or preparing it for viewings. It could be squatters. There are so many perfectly normal, plausible, reasons she could be hearing these noises and because she has had an awful experience with the house, is allowing them to carry more weight than she usually would. She could of course be hearing bugger all and want the house to remain empty. We don't know.

If you are in contact with your SIL I would let her know so she can get the place checked out and try not to think anymore about it. Thanks

Ghosts might run upstairs but they don't need to use electricity, so if sockets are in use, someone extant is living there.

Bluntness100 · 27/08/2021 08:26

Ghosts don’t exist, but if they did they don’t use sockets. Nor make lots of noise walking uo and down stairs etc. So if your mind is working like that due to grief then try to think logically, 💐

The most logical solution is of course squatters, or someone with an over active imagination.

Looubylou · 27/08/2021 08:41

Mice, rats, noise travelling from occupied houses either side, spooked neighbours due to history. Even pigeons on the roof make a racket - you could easily convince yourself someone is living in my loft.

Definitely. Ghosts don’t even needs stairs. Surely they’d just waft about in any direction to whichever room they so choose? Also I don’t think they have much they need to plug in.
ispepsiokay · 27/08/2021 14:40

I'm guessing OP that your neighbours story has put off a potential purchaser and you feel that the neighbour should mind their own business when future people view the property?

If so, I'm with you — the neighbour needs to stop telling stories
