New office - 3hr rtn journey

AIBU to be considering leaving a job due to the commute.

We were WFH for the last 18 months but have now returned to a new office. It took me 20 mins by car to get to the old one which was brilliant. I now have to take public transport due to the central location and it's 90 mins each way.

I work 6 hours per day and spend 3 hours travelling.

DH thinks it's a normal amount (his commute is similar). I just don't want to continue like this, it's exhausting!

That has been my commute for most of my working life, I would have liked shorter but it wasn’t possible. But if it doesn’t work for you then of course it is reasonable for you to leave.

I did a commute like this for 5 years with a break in the middle for mat leave. I nearly quit in the first 3 months of the job as a result but stuck it out as the job was a big promotion for me. It's a toss up - is the job worth the effect the commute has on the rest of your life?

I wouldn’t do this unless there was no decent alternative or there was something very compelling about the role. Factors that would also help would be if the journey had at least one extended element to it where I could get a seat - I miss reading as much as when I commuted by train.

But even then, this isn’t what you signed up to - that is going to rankle and cause dissatisfaction. Consider the advice from other posters on the relocation point.

If you're on megabucks or a career path to megabucks, it might be worth putting up with. Otherwise sod that

No megabucks coming my way any time soon. It's not a bad wage for what it is, but I don't earn much. The RTN journey costs more than an hours wage, put it that way.

I'd be spending all that commute job hunting unless I could work from home 3 days a week.

ChickpeaCrunch · 26/08/2021 19:08

If you shift your hours would the commute time be ĺess? I start and leave early and miss the 5 o'clock rush home it saves so much time

bellabasset · 26/08/2021 19:08

I think it depends how many days you are working and if it's Mon to Fri on a fortnightly rota work one day at home and one day in the office

For me a half hour commute by bike is the most I would do. That way I get some exercise each day.

I would definitely look for a more convenient job or a WFH job.

Your current commute is 3 hours of your day that is not just unpaid it actually costs you money.
