Posting here for traffic as need an answer quite quickly.
My DS has a summer job in a local pub. Surprised to see he is only getting £7 per hour when min wage should be over £8

Are there exceptions to the min wage that I don't know about?

Is he getting paid properly with pay slips or his he getting cash in hand?

Sparklesocks · 26/08/2021 16:07

It’s £8.36 for 21-22 year olds
Is it cash in hand?

Clocktopus · 26/08/2021 16:08

He should be getting £8.36 an hour. Has he recently turned 21? It could be that they've not realised and forgotten to move him up to the next band of minimum wage.

LublinToDublin · 26/08/2021 16:08

How old is he? The amount is age related

Clocktopus · 26/08/2021 16:09

A lot of pubs pay cash in hand but it's still on the books and with a proper payslip, cash doesn't mean under the table.

LublinToDublin · 26/08/2021 16:09

Sorry just realised age in the title

Ducksurprise · 26/08/2021 16:11

No way around minimum wage (except first year of apprenticeship) could be they think he is under 21.

Ask him to query it.

SevenOldLadies · 26/08/2021 16:11

They’re not claiming he’s an apprentice, are they?

Ducksurprise · 26/08/2021 16:12

Cash in hand means not declared, no tax or NI.

You can be paid in cash with a payslip.

Yarboosucks · 26/08/2021 16:16

Not cash in hand, paid monthly through an accountant into his bank account. He had to provide his NI details so all legit from that perspective. An accountant worth their salt should have picked that up!

They do get tips - is that relevant?

Not an apprentice or anything like that.

Tips don't count towards the wage, they should get those on top/in addition. He needs to query it and if they are underpaying him he should report it, it can be done online here:

www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/national-minimum-wage-enquiries-and-complaints

ErickBroch · 26/08/2021 16:18

tips are not relevant in the UK. He needs to inform his employer and they need to backdate pay.

Yarboosucks · 26/08/2021 16:30

Thanks all!

My daughter is 17 and gets €10.80 an hour but I think this is prob above average. She works as a waitress in a hotel.
