How much do you spend on shopping weekly/monthly?

ok, so I'm trying to prove a point to DH and give him some what of a reality check on how much a food shop a week is or find out if i am over spending.

We are a family of 6. Myself, DH (eats a fucking lot), 2yo DS, 4yo DD, 4 month old baby, 8yo stepson (EW)
I spend roughly £150 a week on food, washing, shampoos, nappies, wipes, everything household based etc and that's without top ups of what we run out of.

I think this is about average? I do want to cut down but I'm not sure how because DH and kids eat like horses. Baby is going to be starting baby food in the next 2 months so its going to go even higher. I also cook DH lunches for work so he doesn't have to buy lunch everyday.

What do you all spend roughly a week/month? And is £150 a week to much, average or not alot for 6 mouths to feed?

OP posts:

How on earth can a man who eats a family worth amount of meat at one sitting possibly think you spend too much on food? He needs to shut the hell up or eat less.

MonsterMunchConnoisseur · 26/08/2021 15:32

3 in our family including my 18 month dd. We spend anywhere between £45 - £60 a week depending on what we buy. We don't drink alcohol so that helps keep it low.

Remoteso · 26/08/2021 15:34

2 adults and 2 primary children

Average £800 a month on groceries & toiletries & cleaning products. (I do YNAB so track it).

Anything like gifts or clothes from supermarket or extras like food & drink if we have people round aren't included in that!

OhSmellyCatSmellyCat · 26/08/2021 15:34

No meat but lots of fish and veg. Everything cooked from scratch unless really pushed and one take out a week. No top up shops, if we haven't got it, tough
£250 a week on average I think

Seahawk80 · 26/08/2021 15:42

We spend an average of £100-110 a week including alcohol and cleaning products. 2 adults and a 4 year old so I think you are doing well! I meal plan and we don't eat loads of meat but that includes lunches for us all around 4 days a week.

user159 · 26/08/2021 15:43

Two adults and one pre schooler who is at nursery 4 days a week. We spend between £60-£80 a week depending if it's Tesco or Lidl - I like somethings from each so mix it up. Probably an extra £20 on top up/things we fancy. Quite happy with that. It's definitely gone up since we started wfh but then we don't buy as much at lunchtimes so has balanced out.

youdoyoutoday · 26/08/2021 15:44

Family of 4 spending about 150 to 180. I go to aldi to get most of it then go to asda for the bits I can't get in aldi.

JorisBonson · 26/08/2021 15:45

Average £80 a week for 2 adults and 2 cats. Includes some decent wine and beers. Can be up to £150 if we need to stock the freezer / cat cupboard / have people over.

bananapumpkin · 26/08/2021 15:47

You're doing really well Smile

I spend about £700 a month for just myself and DH. It would be very easy to cut this down but the money is there and we really enjoy our food.

Notradespeopleareavailable · 26/08/2021 15:48
@Notradespeopleareavailable just apply to eat well for less if you can put up with Greg Wallace and Chris Bavin for a week??
Thanks Rabbit - I've found their website and they are looking for participants! Hey I may just give this a go ....

MrsPerfect12 · 26/08/2021 15:49

Family of 5 budget of £320 a week but my petrol comes out of that. Some weeks I spend it all and some I save £100+ spend at least £200.

bunnytheegghunter · 26/08/2021 15:49

1 adult , 2 older teens 2 kids. 150-180 a week! That's buying as cheaply as possible no large joints of lamb or beef 😭 but does include all meals for the week.

AllTheSingleLadiess · 26/08/2021 15:51

I like be with 2 teens and we eat £150pw

Challenge him to do a week's shop for less.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/08/2021 15:53

OP, maybe you should go on Eat Well for Less and Gregg Wallace can take 'Mr 5 chicken breasts' to task if he won't listen to you telling him the bleeding obvious.

PersonaNonGarter · 26/08/2021 15:56

OP, you are doing really well. I think you aren’t going to be able to spend less while your family expects meat protein like that at every meal.

Get DH to take control of it so he can see the costs.

Mydogisagentleman · 26/08/2021 16:03

Me, DH who eats like a horse but not 5 chicken breasts at a time, and dog. DD is at university.
I spend between £100 and £120 a week.
He likes to eat meat or fish daily and we don’t have prepared ready meals.
It is much more expensive to eat a decent diet than shop at farmfoods.

SevenOldLadies · 26/08/2021 16:14

How completely unsurprising that he’s one of THOSE men.

Get him to buy his extra meat out of his personal spends.

Molly499 · 26/08/2021 16:15

If you can afford to spend that much then I’d continue to do so maybe try and cut down the greedy husband rations.

It’s impossible to compare, each family is so different and some people really need to stick to a tight budget so will have been forced to adapt cooking and shopping habits. There is no right and wrong here surely.

We are a family of 4 adults with a very fussy cat, we cook from scratch, use high quality ingredients, all working from home so lots of meals and spend £1,300 to £1,500 a month which is ridiculously high. We are very lucky that we can do this, it’s not always been the case but we really love our food.

Use a spaghetti bolognaise as an example, some people put about 50p worth of beef in and use a jar of sauce so this is going to be much cheaper than buying 750g of beef, bacon, celery, basil, oregano, red wine, tomato’s etc to make from scratch.

Surely people do what they want/need for their own situation. Tell your husband to get lost.

Suprima · 26/08/2021 16:17

@Shopaholic111

So the 2 little ones actually eat alot, i wish some days I could give them a pizza for tea but they like fresh meat + veg, proper home cooked meals every night which is good but also costly but I will suck it up and do it because it is good for them. Dh is training so if I cook say a curry, he will have a whole pack of 5 chicken breasts to himself for 1 meal AND STILL RAID THE CUPBOARD AFTER. Step son is the opposite and has more of the junk food so I then also have to buy that. I shop at Lidl, i dont buy brands unless its certain things like ketchup. I managed to cut down from 200 to 150 a few months ago by a bit of batch cooking. Im just not sure what else I can cut back on.

Also, the last time I sent DH shopping he come back with absolutely nothing on the list, and got complete irrelevant shit like lube so he will not be going again😂

You do realise that he is mugging you off with strategic incompetence so he never has to do it again?

He’s talking the piss with the 5 chicken breasts- he should be sorting out bulking foods separately.

cheeseisnice · 26/08/2021 16:19

Two adults, three children. We spend about £200 a week on food, household and pet supplies.

Jerseygirl12 · 26/08/2021 16:20

Family of 4 adults, about £280 and that includes alcohol , washing powder etc and cat food. We also have one takeaway, one dinner out and I have a few lunches out each week.

Miliao · 26/08/2021 16:24

£100-160 a week for two adults, not including any takeaways or dinner/lunches out. Online Waitrose for main shop, then top up in Aldi for certain things (their wagyu beef burgers are the best).

waitingpatientlyforspring · 26/08/2021 16:42

Family of 4 with 2 cats. Easily spend £130 a week, last week was £160 plus a mid week £25 and £30 on a take away.

I just can't seem to get the bills down. We are drinkers though and spend a lot on alcohol.

JellyNellie · 26/08/2021 16:47

Family of 6 2 adults 7year old 5year old, 1&2year old we spend 150-200 a week depending where we shop this is without our weekly hair products and moisturizers

MintyGreenDream · 26/08/2021 16:49

Around £120 a week for family of 3
