We're thinking about it ourselves.

Swaffham is a lovely town near the coast.
Cromer is always popular as is Wells-next-the-Sea.

No idea about schools as we're of retirement age.

I'll be watching this thread.

moved to Norfolk 15 yrs ago,so laid back its almost horizontal, love it,we moved from Oxfordshire

StripeyDeckchair · 26/08/2021 18:44

Just remember there is extensive coastal erosion on the east coast so don't move too close to the sea.

SkylarFerris · 26/08/2021 18:55

Sea Palling is lovely

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 26/08/2021 18:56

My parents moved to Norfolk from London when I was a child... Its the best decision they ever made. I can see the sea from my workplace and be there within a 10 min walk from home.

When they were house hunting (preinternet) we would come and stay on the holiday camps and my parents would look at houses whilst my nan supervised us on site. So that's one way of viewing the area.

What is your budget, who is moving with you, small children teens etc different parts of the county have a very different atmosphere? Is there anywhere else in the country you would like to visit semi regularly as we have no motorways so you want to live the side of the county nearest where you want to visit as it can add several hours to your journey.

Not all of the East Coast is eroding but there are certainly areas to avoid, Hemsby, Happisburgh in particular.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 26/08/2021 20:29

I've lived in Norfolk all my life...sadly about an hour from the coast...I love this county and will never move anywhere else.

HeddaGarbled · 26/08/2021 20:34

That’s a leap of faith: to move somewhere you’ve never even visited. Visit!

HellequineViriato · 26/08/2021 20:35

Grew up in Norfolk in the villages and on the coast. My dad was a village copper back in the days when they existed. Would love to go back but priced out. Now live in the equivalent of hell.

sausagepastapot · 26/08/2021 20:38

We fell in love with it during our holiday this summer. We stayed in Felmingham which was gorgeous. We visited Happisburgh, Sea Palling and Cromer, all lovely.

Earthgirlsareeasy · 26/08/2021 20:58

Housing affordability in North Norfolk varies enormously. Norfolk coastal areas are extensive and range from the extremely expensive areas of Thornham/Burnham/Brancaster/Wells etc round to Caister/Yarmouth and loads of variably priced areas in between. Worth investigating the market in the area you’re interested in.

Mydogisagentleman · 26/08/2021 21:01

We live near to king’s Lynn, around a 20 minute drive to the coast.
Property prices are reasonable and the quality of life is good.
OTOH, racism is horrendous, public transport is woeful and opportunities for children and young adults are appalling. Our hospital is failing and needs replacing.
Having Said that, I can’t imagine living anywhere else

Thingsthatgo · 26/08/2021 21:03

Norfolk village names are awesome, and often said completely differently from how they are spelled... check out the pronunciations beforehand!

namesnamesnamesnames · 26/08/2021 21:03

I would never move to a popular Norfolk seaside town. Beautiful, lovely to visit and a regular for us, but so so busy and impossible to travel through easily at peak summer.

Grew up nearby. Hated it for all the reasons mentioned here. The racism is the thing that would stop me ever returning.
Damnloginpopup · 26/08/2021 21:04

We won't want you if you keep shouting 😁

We love the place, I'd LOVE a holiday house there but dear Lord all the reasons above are enough to put us off living there full time. It is beautiful there though.

Why on earth would anyone move somewhere they have never even visited ?! Confused

GetInThereLewis · 26/08/2021 21:06

I have mixed races children, I do find it racist here unfortunately.

PerpetualStudent · 26/08/2021 21:06

Moved there age 7 and never took to it - agree with the racism as PP mentioned. Scarpered for uni and never looked back!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 26/08/2021 21:07

Hospitals is a great point, there's only 3 in Norfolk, Norfolk and Norwich in Norwich, one in King's Lynn and James Paget in Gorleston plus a minor injuries unit in Cromer. So something to keep in mind.

Notonthestairs · 26/08/2021 21:12

Visit, then rent. Do not buy until you've spent a year there.

I wouldn't really say swaffham is near he coast, it's probably a good hours drive.
DroopyClematis · 26/08/2021 21:18

Norwich is a fabulous city. Not too big , very historical, beautiful and fairly cosmopolitan.
UEA is a cosmopolitan university attracting many serious scholars , to PHD level from around the world.

As to racism, well I've lived in various places in the Midlands over many years and it's very ethnically diverse . I've also lived in the south east in various places, including London.

I can honestly say that the most racist of all of these places was Birmingham which is one of the most 'diverse' places in the UK.

So take no notice of the racism accusation of Norfolk.
Like many very rural communities, a suspicion of all outsiders is quite common... it's not just about other ethnicities.

dottyaboutstripes · 26/08/2021 21:20

Swaffham isn't that near the coast and it's not lovely! I was very glad to leave Norfolk!

Killergigglebunnies · 26/08/2021 21:22

Weirdly we are going to see properties this weekend in Norfolk as a second home. Bloody love Norfolk. I could live there permanently, but dh wouldn’t with his work. Toe hum 🤷🏼‍♀️

GetInThereLewis · 26/08/2021 21:26

Take no notice? I shall inform my children and the school team who have been dealing with it then...
