Anyone had experience of getting a speed limit changed?

Sorry not really AIBU -but wondering if anyone has successfully lobbied police or council etc re road speed limit change?
We live a mile outside the edge of a small town and it's another mile to the next village. It's a minor A road in a rural area, but quite busy. The speed limit after leaving the town changes to the national speed limit sign (60mph), back to 20mph when you get to the village. As this 2 mile stretch is quite straight, most traffic bombs along at 70/80 and upwards, sometimes it's like living on a racetrack. We know it is more than 60 because whenever we drive to or from home we are either overtaken, or tooted, or tailgated as other drivers clearly think 60 is not fast enough.
We've lived here for a few years, with the traffic not really a problem, but recently all around the area many limits were lowered to 20, and speeds have increased even more on this stretch as drivers are so relieved to be out of the 20mph limits around town. Many people have commented on this too.
There are quite a lot of pedestrians and cyclists between the village and the town as it's a fairly short distance with no public transport. We have neighbouring houses down a short lane off this road, and maybe half a dozen farm access gates.
Walking along the pavement is scary, feels like you will be blown over. Turning out from the driveway is often difficult due to the speed of oncoming traffic, and the noise of a rattly lorry is quite a lot more at 80mph than it would be at a lower speed.
Anyway, we feel that at least the 60mph should be enforced by speed cameras, or better still it should be reduced to 40mph as many similar areas are. Yes we are pissed off that all around, limits have been reduced, and are enforced, but here it has increased and everyone who drives along this road knows full well there will be no consequences for speeding.
Contacted the council, who are responsible for setting speed limits. They told me to contact the police, who told me to contact the council. So clearly no-one gives a fuck. Have contacted local councillor who will raise this at the next meeting, but not holding out much hope. Any ideas or has anyone successfully managed a similar situation?

Do you have a parish council? Start with them, they should then engage with the local authority. They will need to do some investigation, ie any accidents, and look at undertaking some data collating( normally strips across the road) to see what the actual volume of traffic and actual speed is.

It’s possible but can take a long time and a lot of campaigning

Thanks, @Chloemol, didn't think about a parish council, will look into it.

The council are responsible for setting the speed limit and providing traffic calming measures. The police are responsible for enforcing the speed limit.

Ask the council to conduct a speed survey and to undertake a review of the road to assess the suitability for traffic calming measures. Sings which display the drivers speed are good as they get drivers attention.

Ask the police if they can place a mobile speed camera.

Ask residents along the road to display "20s plenty" signs. www.20splenty.org/

To increase pressure on the council, submit a petition and ask your local MP to support. Especially if your MP is a different party to the council administration.

Have their been any accidents on the road? If not, you have no chance TBH.

I was part of a group that campaigned to change a speed limit near a school. They only started to even consider it after a 10 year old girl was left with a life changing brain injury after being hit by a speeding car. It took far too long after that for it to finally be agreed on.

Amazingly there have been no accidents as far as I know. I will wait to see what my local councillor comes up with after the next meeting, then will contact my MP. May go to the police station too. Anyone working for a council who might have other suggestions please?
