Sorry not really AIBU -but wondering if anyone has successfully lobbied police or council etc re road speed limit change?
We live a mile outside the edge of a small town and it's another mile to the next village. It's a minor A road in a rural area, but quite busy. The speed limit after leaving the town changes to the national speed limit sign (60mph), back to 20mph when you get to the village. As this 2 mile stretch is quite straight, most traffic bombs along at 70/80 and upwards, sometimes it's like living on a racetrack. We know it is more than 60 because whenever we drive to or from home we are either overtaken, or tooted, or tailgated as other drivers clearly think 60 is not fast enough.
We've lived here for a few years, with the traffic not really a problem, but recently all around the area many limits were lowered to 20, and speeds have increased even more on this stretch as drivers are so relieved to be out of the 20mph limits around town. Many people have commented on this too.
There are quite a lot of pedestrians and cyclists between the village and the town as it's a fairly short distance with no public transport. We have neighbouring houses down a short lane off this road, and maybe half a dozen farm access gates.
Walking along the pavement is scary, feels like you will be blown over. Turning out from the driveway is often difficult due to the speed of oncoming traffic, and the noise of a rattly lorry is quite a lot more at 80mph than it would be at a lower speed.
Anyway, we feel that at least the 60mph should be enforced by speed cameras, or better still it should be reduced to 40mph as many similar areas are. Yes we are pissed off that all around, limits have been reduced, and are enforced, but here it has increased and everyone who drives along this road knows full well there will be no consequences for speeding.
Contacted the council, who are responsible for setting speed limits. They told me to contact the police, who told me to contact the council. So clearly no-one gives a fuck. Have contacted local councillor who will raise this at the next meeting, but not holding out much hope. Any ideas or has anyone successfully managed a similar situation?
