Everyone will have a different opinion.

What do you think you're being unreasonable about?

Nicer for what?
Tell us what constitutes nice for you, and people will be able to tell you how thy think the two areas rank on your 'niceness' criteria.

Cornwall is quite a large place so it depends where you're going to live. I'd prefer Isle of Wight to somewhere like St Austell, Bodmin or Newquay for example. The far end of Cornwall is stunning so I think that would be a beautiful place to live (far more beautiful than the beaches I've been to on the IOW). Both are a nightmare for travel IME, a car on the ferry to the IOW is extortionate and ours ran 2 hours late (although I don't know what discount residents get) and the roads to Cornwall are really narrow and chocka with tourists all summer. It depends where exactly you're thinking in each place though.

You won’t be referred to as an “emmet” or “up-country”on the IOW

They will call you an overner instead.

Following as we are considering moving to the Isle of Wight.

Both have their shit bits

The Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall is beautiful, I'd move there over the IOW. I lived in Cornwall for 2 years and DH in both places.

IoW feels like the UK 20-30 years ago. And not necessarily in a good way. But much more affordable than Cornwall.

StormyTeacups · 25/08/2021 13:40

I live on IoW and have holidayed regularly in Cornwall. I wouldn't swap tbh. As much as the ferries are a pain you can easily be quite isolated in Cornwall. It is far less seasonal and empty feeling here. Yes we have holiday homes and a few emptier esplanades in the winter months but it doesn't feel too different. We have been very happy here. Secondary schools aren't great but like anywhere else, you make the best of what is available.

StormyTeacups · 25/08/2021 13:41

And I certainly don't recognise the 20 year ago reference, apart from pretty dire clothes shopping.

No, you will be a grockle instead. I would go for Cornwall my ILs live on the IOW and complain alot about the ferry. It also makes it expensive for people to visit you.

Am on the IoW. I’ve only been to Cornwall once for a wedding over a decade ago so would struggle to compare them.

I will say that before you move to either, please come for a week in January, ideally when it’s raining hard and not a lot is open. The IoW is glorious in summer but can feel quite different in the winter (and can be very windy). The east side is more populated than the west.

CruCru · 25/08/2021 14:08

Re the ferries - islanders can get discounted tickets but these get booked up during busy times. People do moan about the cost of ferries but I’m not sure which is more difficult - a drive to the IoW including a ferry or a much longer drive to a remote part of Cornwall.

People on the IoW don’t seem to get annoyed when people from the mainland move there (or maybe they’re polite to my face) whereas I get the impression that some people in Cornwall do (or perhaps they are the most vocal about it).
