Sofa facing the kitchen?

Our living room and kitchen is open plan. Currently our sofa has its back to the breakfast bar and is facing the tv, however I’m considering moving the sofa so that it faces the breakfast bar meaning we’ll have more floor space for yoga/kids toys. We also like socialising in our house and as it faces the kitchen it allows for more of that. We’d put the tv on the wall next to the breakfast bar. We are trying to reduce our time spent watching tv so by turning the sofa the other way it would hopefully change that. AIBU to do this or will it look ridiculous?

It’s your house! Have it however works best for you. The only thing about TVs on the wall is that I find they are sometimes too high to watch comfortably. Totally up to you though.

Can you do a diagram? Our sofa faces into the kitchen, but we don't have a TV in there. If we did the side would be facing away from kitchen and create a different zone. I like the way it is currently as DD (6) has lots of room to play

Wilkolampshade · 24/08/2021 07:05

We tried a similar thing once, and found the difference in height between seating at the breakfast bar and the seat height of the sofa was odd and impractical.
Not keen on telly on walls either, they tend to dominate the space, which can be very antisocial.
As you describe the room currently it has zoned areas which allow for different activities, which personally I prefer?
But try it, you can always move it back 😊

Historyfan · 24/08/2021 07:32

Ive give it a go,live with it for a week and see if its better
If not,just move it back

Here’s a very badly drawn diagram for those who asked

I think your new way looks better, tbh.

Monestera · 24/08/2021 12:51

But won’t the sofa in the new position still be facing the tv? Only now, the person cooking/cleaning in the kitchen won’t see the screen.

BonsaiBonsai · 24/08/2021 12:51

Can you put the telly on the top wall and have the corner against the bottom wall? So you can see the telly but not directly facing into it. Or is there a door/window there?

BonsaiBonsai · 24/08/2021 12:52

Sorry, sofa against the bottom wall

figwine · 24/08/2021 12:52

Personally I don't like TVs on walls, though obviously others do. I think the new layout would work but why would it have to entail the TV being on the wall?

It will be facing the breakfast table, which will make it more open if we are socialising. The tv will just be there too for when we wind down on the evenings

There’s doors and windows there unfortunately otherwise that would be ideal. The two options are the only way they can go

We couldn’t have a cabinet there as it wouldn’t work with the breakfast bar

So your sofa is in the middle of the room at an angle? Can’t you put it against the back wall ?

We can’t put it anywhere other than the two options due to windows/doors

I like option B. I'm not a fan of sofas in the middle of rooms and prefer them against a wall, seems like a waste of space to me. Unless you have a massive sitting room and separate space for kids to play etc.

We only have the living room and then DC have some toys in their room but option B would allow for more space to play

I prefer the second option. Sofas against walls look better. We have actually just moved somewhere with a very similar layout to you. Our sofa is o the back wall and faces the kitchen. I love being able to sit there but still chat to DH in the kitchen. We don't like tvs on walls though so after much deliberating the TV now lives in the spare room and we watch far less. Not sure how long that will last though!

I’m considering getting rid of the tv and investing in a projector instead.

Surely it will only take a few minutes to change it around see if you like it then change it back if you don't
