… and you smiled because you knew.

Why am I seeing this quote popping up all over social media attributed to Shakespeare?! I’ve spotted it on several wedding inspo boards on Pinterest, people posting it on Facebook, and prints of it on Etsy.

AIBU to think that if anyone had actually read any Shakespeare or seen any of his plays they’d know pretty instantly from the syntax alone that this isn’t his? And that if you’re going to attribute a quote to a writer for a sign at your wedding, you could as a bare minimum take 15 seconds to google it first?

That is creepy

@Beetlewing

That is creepy
It's only one translation. There are others that are far less OTT.

I see that you love me. Ah! you smile because I see it! may be less 'cuddly^

I put a quote in law essay about how people treat animals and in the reference said it was generally attributed to ghandi but no evidence can be found that this is true! So I was at least accurate!

There’s a ‘Frida Kahlo’ quote that’s all over the internet and can be found on wall art and other various tat made by reputable brands. It isn’t by Frida Kahlo at all, it’s by a living artist called Oroma Elewa and she has had to spend SO much time trying to get it correctly attributed to her Sad

Is that the 'I am my own muse' one?

@BeauxRingarde

It's Arrigo Boito, from Verdi's Falstaff.

Come ti vidi
M’innamorai,
E tu sorridi
Perché lo sai.”

It's confused with Shakespeare because obviously Falstaff is based on The Merry Wives of Windsor.

I always remember it being one of the most frequent mottos found in Baci chocolates on my year abroad in Italy!

CorianderBee that’s the one!
