To think that bald does not mean completely hair-less?

Please settle a dispute between me and OH. Does bald refer to men with very little hair or men with no hair at all on their head?

YABU: bald means not one single hair on your head
YANBU: bald means not much hair on your head

DP - once there's more smooth skin than hair on the top of the head, it's bald. The sides of the head are irrelevant, as they can stay hairy for the next 60 years as part of normal male pattern hair loss. It's the top of the head that counts

Exactly! My DH says the same. His friends agree. Listen to the bald men. As DH says...if you had to be totally smooth headed to be bald, there would hardly be any bald men. Which as we all know, there are lots!

@pucarbuile
I suppose, depending how you look at it, you could say they've got a bald patch or a hairy patch?

BogRollBOGOF · 24/08/2021 11:21

I'd say bald from over 50% when a comb over is no longer viable. Forehead to crown must be bald.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 24/08/2021 11:27

It's just about the head, right?

Bald - zero hair on head
Balding - thinning hair, hairline receding, combover time for the Trumps of the world.
Bald patch - normally on the top of the head. A circle(ISH) of no or sparse hair, rest of head ok or thinning.

EmeraldShamrock · 24/08/2021 11:34

Bald is hairless though men with less hair and an obvious patch are referred to as "a bald man" rather than describing a balding man.

BeauxRingarde · 24/08/2021 12:20

~Bald - zero hair on head

How are so many people getting this so wrong?

Almost no men actually have zero hair on their head. However, we all know there are lots of bald men. I mean, it only takes 5 seconds on pondering that to realise you have misconstrued what bald actually means.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 24/08/2021 12:52

🙄 I just love people telling me what my personal opinion ought to be.
To me, bald means bald. Anything short of bald is not bald. If this means there are very few bald men around then there are very few bald men around. Jesus h.

BeauxRingarde · 24/08/2021 13:05

Well, when your personal opinion is so clearly wrong, expect to be told so.
Bald does not mean zero hair and anyone with half a brain knows that. Sorry if you don't count yourself in that category.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 24/08/2021 13:12

Nope. I do not agree and I don't give a shit what insults you fling at me. If you have no hair, you're bald. If you have hair on your head, you're not bald. If you are so arrogant that you feel only your opinion is valid on such a trivial non issue and so feel compelled to call me stupid for having the audacity to have my own view, that's very much a you problem and not something I care about. 🤷‍♀️

Any need to be so rude?

Anyway You didn't like my cat comment so here is another question.

If I said to you 'I have a bald patch on the back of my head' Would you expect it to have hair?

Tal45 · 24/08/2021 14:48

Men go bald. Men don't lose every hair on their head when they go bald, they are still bald though. My dad has been bald for as many years as I can remember, probably 30 years. He still has hair around his ears and nape, he just mostly doesn't have hair.

People who disagree need to look it up in the dictionary:
Bald describes a person as having no or little hair on their head
