Last week I got a message from a friend asking if I wanted to buy a spare ticket to an open-air concert. I was keen to go and happy to pay the price her friend (who I don’t know) was asking.
Anyway, on the day of the concert my friend messaged again to tell me it had been cancelled. There had been a lot of rain at the site and there were health and safety concerns. She said ‘Hopefully we’ll all be able to make the rescheduled date’.
I still want to go… however, it’s occurred to me that maybe I should offer to sell the ticket back to the original owner? He or she (no idea who they are) might be able to go on the new date. My friend hasn’t asked, and I didn’t get a bargain in particular - £10 off the face value - so I don’t feel like I’ve ‘profited’ from their inability to go.
If it was a friend who’d sold me the ticket, I’d definitely offer it back. But I don’t know this person - in some ways, it’s no different to having bought it from StubHub or similar.
YABU - offer to sell the ticket back
YANBU - they sold it; it’s yours now
