I was walking past a well known supermarket today and the security guard at the door threw his chocolate wrapper onto the street. I asked him politely to pick it up and he laughed. When I came out of the shop it was still at his foot and he said he'd do it later and what was it to me.

I am a man btw. Anyway I said I'd speak to the mgmt and he told me to go ahead. I did and when he waited he started swearing at me saying ''you aren't my fucking dad, stop telling me what to do and go away/'' I explained it was my neighbourhood and my kids lived in the flats above the shop and it was disrespectful and unprofessional to throw litter and that he shouldn't be swearing at customers.

A female shopper then, who seemed quite aggressive and was appeared an intimidating character, took his side and started shouting, yes shouting, at me. She said he might be having a bad day, it's only a bit of litter and you are giving him hell etc.

The manager came and tried to say it wouldn't happen again but the security guard appeared to have no fear of her and told me to clear the fuck off, was very aggressive and to mind my own business and that it was only fucking a bit of litter. At that I left but AIBU?

I’d have done the same. It’s awful how badly people treat the environment and planet.

Snozzlemaid · 23/08/2021 13:35

If it's a security guard employed by the supermarket I'd be making a formal complaint to them.

Blindering · 23/08/2021 13:36

It's the fact he was representing a well known chain and acted like a complete thug in front of his manager too.

You were not wrong.

A new family has moved in just up the road, I was walking the dog the other day and one of them pulled up outside their house, the passenger opened the door, tipped a load of litter into the gutter and then they both went in the house. And no I didn't say anything, if they can do that outside their own house, I don't think they'd have been very approachable. I hate littering

girlmom21 · 23/08/2021 13:39

I'd make a formal complaint to head office, for the littering, unprofessionalism and intimidation.

Ughmaybenot · 23/08/2021 13:42

You weren’t in the wrong imo, I hate littering! I’d be writing a formal complaint. Regardless of his feelings about his apparent right to litter, you can’t start shouting and swearing at customers, that’s utterly bizarre!

HarrietsChariot · 23/08/2021 13:45

Ask for the CCTV of the incident. I imagine the store will have cameras covering the entrance and you are entitled to a copy of footage that contains you.

Blindering · 23/08/2021 13:46

''Regardless of his feelings about his apparent right to litter, you can’t start shouting and swearing at customers, that’s utterly bizarre!''

it's a well known rough area of the city I am in, hence why the customer supported him.

I hope you make a formal complaint to the store.

Blindering · 23/08/2021 13:48

I am this very second on the phone to them.

YANBU. Littering is unacceptable.

TheQueef · 23/08/2021 13:50

See how much we miss the Nanans of yore?
YANBU it really is disgusting to litter plus the lip would anger me enough to email.
How can be ask customers not to shit the place up if he's at it too?

PieceOfString · 23/08/2021 13:50

Shock wow, what low life scum. So he's in place to check everyone's behaving in the shop, well that seems a great recruitment choice! 😱
So depressing that people like this aren't even embarrassed to be a lout.

yourestandingonmyneck · 23/08/2021 13:52

How the hell does this person even have a job?!

He sounds unhinged and like he would be an absolute liability at the very time he may be needed.

Absolutely report.

PieceOfString · 23/08/2021 13:54

If he's giving his manager attitude, I'd bet money that he is often a problem and she wishes she could get rid of him and is well aware of his shortcomings. I have been a manager with a bad employee but the HR process of getting rid is not simple, you need reasons and have to follow procedure, I think instead of giving the manager a bent ear, you might help her out by writing further up the food chain (copying her in) so she is armed with a reason to start trying to manage him out.

Blindering · 23/08/2021 13:55

I reported it, they said it wasn't the shop directly who hire them but an outsourced security company but it would be followed up.

''the lip would anger me enough to email.''

that was the worst, his general attitude.

Glad they took you seriously Blindering
I know it's an old fashioned view but IMO the basics are important.
All he had to do is say oops and pick it up, he knew it was wrong.

I'd have been so tempted to post it through their letter box!
