to think there's a mad amount of violence on Netflix?

Maybe it's my algorithm, but I don't search for or play particularly violent drama or film.
I also use Amazon prime and Britbox, YouTube, etc, and there's a marked difference.

Around 8 out of 10 series or films I start watching on Netflix pretty much explode into heavy, gratuitous violence or some sort of animal cruelty, violence towards women. Whether I'm looking for something apocalyptical, or a mystery drama, a crime procedural or something international.

Maybe I ought to stick to studio Ghibli or just comedy or something, Jesus Christ. Grin

Oh no! I think it can really depend on which ‘corner’ of it you’re on. There are a lot of titles which don’t have those things.

Thewiseoneincognito · 22/08/2021 19:48

It’s all Zombies and end of the world crap on mine. I watched War of the Worlds and it’s tainted my algorithm.

DecadentlyDecisive · 22/08/2021 19:48

The joy here is that you can vote with your feet & unsubscribe.

I wish I could do the same with the increasingly annoying BBC...

ConfusedParticle · 22/08/2021 19:50

true, I can get out, but I suppose I am noticing it more on Netflix rather than other streaming sites I use, and I tend to gravitate towards similar things. I don't like war, violence or stuff like that but it seems to turn up in almost everything over the past year or so.

I don't find it in British stuff to be honest, but European film and drama are fucking OTT!

True Decadently.

ah I don't use BBC, my dp is a BBC news lover though.

I haven’t noticed this on Netflix.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/08/2021 20:07

Mine is all over the place with mix of political drama like House of Cards and zombies/vampires😂

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/08/2021 20:08

I have to say though I am not sure which of the titles currently on my ofder list "explode into heavy, gratuitous violence or some sort of animal cruelty, violence towards women."

Regularsizedrudy · 22/08/2021 20:24

I think there might be different rules for “Netflix originals” because they are never shown on tv so don’t have to abide by normal tv rules re violence, swearing etc and they like to make the most of it I guess. You can usually avoid by looking at the rating though.

NannyAndJohn · 22/08/2021 20:35

All the big studios/streaming sites prioritise the degradation of women above all else because they know it sells.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/08/2021 21:02

What are you people watching👀

PinniGig · 22/08/2021 21:14

Zombies. Drug cartels / torture and rape. Dark "true crime" documentaries. Sci-Fi shit that's just terrible. Comedies that try so hard and are just gross, sticky and awful.

During the first lockdown I watched some really decent stuff on Amazon but it's since been moved to buy or rent only which is a shame.

Last thing I did watch was a documentary about Tonya Harding that followed her during the entire scandal in the 90's and then "A Change of Sex" which is on BBC iPlayer and gives a respectful, heartbreaking insight into the life of Julia Grant.

PinniGig · 22/08/2021 21:17

Netflix documentaries are so painfully slow as well. They literally just insert long pauses without dialogue, throw in random shots of obscurely placed items and drag out a 30 min documentary over an hour and half.

I came in the house as my daughter started watching "Athlete A" and thought I'd watch with her. Five mins in "Is this on Netflix by any chance?"

They know how to take an interesting subject and important story and make it mindnumbingly bad to watch I dunno how they do it.

HollyGrail · 22/08/2021 21:20

I've just been watching Ghosts on BBC very light and amusing, and I am Victoria on BBc4 - brilliant. I struggle with Netflix bringing up and starting stuff I have no interest in and am very fussy about US stuff - it seems to be brill or crap, nothing in between .
So much crime/police/detective/true crime everywhere- I'm sick of it.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/08/2021 21:22

😂 They churned out incredible amount of low quality crap over the lockdown.

anyoldname76 · 22/08/2021 21:28

I think the algorithm of what you what you watch they show more of the same tbh. We've just recently watched new girl and it was light-hearted and fun. It al depends on what you are choosing.

blessedbethechocolate · 22/08/2021 23:51

I've noticed that too. Even though mines a real mix of kids stuff (mainly SpongeBob) and gratuitous violence. My kids don't bother changing to their accounts so my algorithm has no idea what's going on. I'm thinking of leaving Netflix as most of it is dragged out shit and things I can get on other platforms. The only reason I still have it is my 16yr old is obsessed with Ru Paul.

ConfusedParticle · 23/08/2021 00:13

well I'm certainly not encouraging my algorithm to gratuitous violence!

I like psychological, mystery or cerebral crime drams ( I would call inspector morse a cerebral crime drama for what it's worth) ad all I get it dark, fucked up shit with women getting twatted, animals being tortured or splayed around In pools of blood, or long winded male fucking fighting.

I honestly don't get this, with similar searches on any other streaming app.

I land on a drama,, says it's about an apocalypse or whatnot and 5 mins in I'm watching men beat the living shit out of one another.

I mean people thought I was weird because I didnt like pans labyrinth, but I couldnt take the constant face punching with guns and women tied to poles in barns after gang rapes.

TimeForTeaAndG · 23/08/2021 00:22

I've mucked up my algorithm by watching Love is Blind, Indian Matchmaker and My Unorthodox Life.

Kanaloa · 23/08/2021 00:31

Yes there is a lot of violence on programmes nowadays. Hard to avoid.

I agree as well with Netflix originals dragging everything on for what feels like forever. All storylines are massively distended and every episode is 50/60 minutes when it could easily be condensed to 30/40.

PinniGig · 23/08/2021 00:40

I either watch nature / wildlife or music documentaries and during first lock-down I discovered almost the entire South Park were available on Amazon from Series 1 to Series 20. From there I went back to other stuff and once I was all out and full to the brim with Parker and Stone stuff I did the old search for one thing I watched years ago, found it and ended up going down a rabbit hole like when you end up in that weird part of YouTube with just a few clicks on the related or recommended videos.

I watched the documentary following Aileen Wournos in the months, weeks, days and final hours before her execution which was harrowing and I'd already known about but not realised how that woman was failed by everyone at every point for her entire life. That they killed her is beyond my ability to comprehend to be honest.

That took me down other documentaries some of which I watched, some of which I couldn't watch (14 days in May I didn't get all the way through) and then ended up watching old original documentaries on the Jamie Bulger case, Louise Woodward trial. Then when I was getting too bummed out with all the grim stuff I went and found the back catalogue of “Classic Albums” and rediscovered some of my all time favourites all over again.

YouTube is like a really close friend that knows me well and cares about me it's scary. The guys did an amazing job on the algorithm and when it says “We think you might like this__” it seldom disappoints.

When I get up, go get a brew and sit down at the dining table with my laptop then burst into laughter, husband or kids immediately go “Go on then.. what shite are you watching on YouTube today?”

He's right too. I'd never seen anything like it...😂😂

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/08/2021 07:45

I am bit confused if I am stupid anf missing something massive or my netflix trending in UK and recommendations are that different, but can someone give me examples of these gratuitous violence shows?

boatyardblues · 23/08/2021 07:58

Netflix badly needs a ‘show me less of this’ button. I got into a riptide of grim, edgy crime dramas full of violence, ravaged women and their bodies in ditches. It was having an adverse effect on my mental health, forcing a complete change of genre and focus. We now have four separate profiles, ostensibly individually named for each of us but because we have different viewing preferences each has a different flavour. I know to browse in DS2’s profile if I want to see what new comedy has been released or DH’s for documentaries, as they don’t get suggested in mine. Then I go back to my profile and title search what I want. It shouldn’t be like that but Netflix seems to have the most single track, monotonous algorithms.
