AIBU to think giving up sugar is really hard? If you’ve done it, what do you eat?

I really want to do this as I get bad migraines and think sugar is a trigger. I never used to eat much aside from natural sugar but during lockdown went a bit mad and now feel so
Lethargic and sluggish.. but I seem to crave it!!

What kind of thing do you eat if you don’t eat sugar? I want to put a bit of a plan together

But GCSE biology will be simplistic. Yes all cards contain sugars but any dietician will tell you that some sugars are better than others. Many of the world’s population have a carb as their main source of food, it doesn’t make them fat! There’s much more to it than “All carbs/sugars are bad”. Every vegetable has sugars in them, we aren’t going to put vegetables in the same “bad food” category as a Mars bar are we?

Many carbs are very good for you as part of a balanced diet.

They aren’t up to date with the latest studies then.

@NavigatingAdolescence Lizziesandal is right, I do low carbing and not all carbs are bad, I make choices based on the carb content of food, so I avoid beetroot and carrots and have cauliflower, aubergine etc as they’re lower carb.

Oh I don't disagree, although I only get carbs from veg nowadays and feel healthier than I have for years

Tbh lots of the people I know in Africa and India who eat loads of carbs are definitely fat!

I’ve low carbed for over a decade and just undertaken a 90 day plan where all the science (including evolutionary) is considered.

The way we eat now is not how we evolved to eat, which is likely the cause of many chronic diseases. Cauliflower is not considered a carb - root veg l/fruit absolutely is and should not be eaten all year around as it signals to the body that winter is coming and encourages fat storage. By not eating root veg/carbs for a while the body signals that it is time to ditch the fat and heal the body.

In 3 months of eating how we evolved to eat (not what food manufacturers want us to eat) I’ve completely changed shape, bone density is up, muscle is up (without any strength training), my chronic back condition has ceased, inflammation markers are gone, blood iron is up, skin is glowing and hair is strong. Sleeping better, have more energy, want to move and stretch.

But sure. Me and 50,000 other people around the planet (including medics and scientists) are completely wrong. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm not on any diet but moved to Asia and it's so easy to avoid sugar here. I actually did it by accident at first! Because where I live, nobody uses ready made sauces, freezer food, pre-made sandwiches/etc or microwave meals, or eats cereals. It's just not in the culture to eat instant food and so the sneaky sugar that I used to consume unknowingly in the UK is no longer an issue, and that's where I got most of my sugar from. So just cut out that stuff?

Why does the word diet mean something different when applied to humans than animals?

A lion’s diet consists of what is biologically sound for them.

What does it say about how we eat in the west that diet means only restriction/temporary changes?

Macncheeseballs · 27/08/2021 10:57

#Navigating, that sounds interesting but surely the cauliflower thing would only apply to some parts of the world?

Bit late to the party but I just wanted to make a suggestion. I always crave something sweet after my evening meal but have found that having a cup of green tea tends to switch off that craving. No idea why but worth a try perhaps?
