To ask where to buy decent girls clothing..

My sister has asked DP and I to buy our niece clothes for her birthday as she practically has everything else and doesn't really need anything. AIBU to suggest that clothing stores are really taking the pee with girls clothes? So many crop tops, short shorts and revealing outfits, my niece is going to be 8, not 18! How do they get away with dressing young children like this??

People keep buying it I guess. My DSD usually finds shorts in the 'boys' section. They are longer and have pockets and not as tight.

No unreasonable at all. I have a 9 year old who gets so upset that I say no to bellytops ect and I know (eyeroll) people say we shouldn't sexualise clothes I can't help but feel uncomfortable with the thought of my daughter walking around in skimpy skirts and shorts with her belly out.

But I have met somewhat in the middle with a belly top that has an underlayer so it covers the belly.

Even tracksuits or matching leggings with a branded top for example always come with a belly top style design urgh so annoying.

A summer dress is probably your safest bet or get her to choose with you that will probably be nice and go for cake and a drink if you have the option 😉

PumpkinKlNG · 21/08/2021 22:32

Because people buy it? I regularly see girls dressed in crop top and tiny shorts combo

DinosApple · 21/08/2021 22:33

Try John Lewis, H&M, M&S and Sainsbury's. DD1 has some denim shorts from mountain warehouse that are longer, but she's small and the sizing is massive so they'll have to wait another year.

OiPanda · 21/08/2021 22:35

Maybe there's loads in stock because people haven't gone away as much this summer?

angelikacpickles · 21/08/2021 22:35

I have a 10 year old DD and have never had any trouble avoiding crop tops, short shorts or revealing outfits. I'm sure they're around but there's plenty of perfectly nice clothes available too in - H&M, Zara, Primark, Next all have nice clothes for girls.

Conchita0792 · 21/08/2021 22:46

It's just so difficult, my sister has asked for autumnal clothing because she has a real glut of summery dresses and clothes, now would normally be the time that the autumn ranges would be released but there really seems to be very little. My sister doesn't believe that a child should have their midriff showing and I tend to agree, hence the trouble.

John Lewis, Polarn O. Pyret, Boden- all have lovely girls' clothes.

Look out for sales.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/08/2021 22:52

At that age you will probably need to ask your DNs opinion on the clothing as well as your sisters.

Can you take her on a shopping trip?

MoonlightMedicine · 21/08/2021 22:53

Fatface have some gorgeous girls clothes at the moment. Not a crop top in sight!

Quornflakegirl · 21/08/2021 22:59

I have two 8 year olds and I buy age appropriate clothes for them mainly from Boden but also Joules, FatFace, occasionally Next and Zara.

Quornflakegirl · 21/08/2021 23:00

And the obvious M&S and John Lewis.

HintofVintagePink · 21/08/2021 23:10

Zara and Tu have just released their autumn ranges. Some lovely things.

OlivesTree · 21/08/2021 23:17

Next, Boden, Joules, Fat Face, Zara, H&M, John Lewis, Sainsbury’s, Gap, M&S.
There are plenty of options that don’t involve bellies. I know they are around but I’ve certainly never had a problem avoiding them.

LemonadeSunshine · 21/08/2021 23:20

I've got some lovely slightly more unusual items from Uniqlo online, some lovely patterns and fabrics, not in the least skimpy or sexualised.
Also Petit Bateau, lovely clothes though somewhat pricey.

Glitterblue · 21/08/2021 23:25

H and M, La Redoute, Verbaudet, Next, Morrisons, Uniqlo

Lineeyesoverhere · 21/08/2021 23:25

Boden, next, Hatley, John Lewis, fat face, joules..

LittleOwl153 · 21/08/2021 23:26

It is hard OP, and really depends on how much of a fashion sense the girl has. My dd at 11 is only really just getting I to what she actaully likes. My DS who is almost 8 couldn't care less what he wears most of the time - but I know some of his friends are already in to their clothes (maybe because of parents Influence?)

As its a present maybe look for some more special things. My dd loves a sports label t-shirt she was given as a present. H&M is a good source of cheaper clothes for that age group. GAP for a good pair of Jeans was also a good call.

Conchita0792 · 22/08/2021 00:19

Thank you for all of the suggestions everyone I'll be trawling the internet tomorrow! She's a very girly girl and loves everything cutesy 😂
